Guest guest
Hi, Iwas diagnosed with graves in July my doctor then told me to have RAI and would not prescribe meds. Went to get another opinion and 2nd dr. put me on Tapazole 10mg three times a day. I am also on Atenolol for heart. I was tested exactly 4 weeks later and now the new dr. says I must take the RAI. Liver enzymes too high and throid not improving enough. My labs are Alks 282 range is 42-130, Sgpt 67 range 8-37 TSH 0.03 range 1.5-5.2 FreeT4 2.5 range 0.8-1.8 FreeT3 more than 20 and should be 2.3-4.2 Doctor is going to call again tomorrow, I was supposed to have made the appointment already RAI. My question is am I out of options because of the elevated liver? Is 4 weeks too short of time to bring thyroid down? Does the other medicine for thyroid have differing effcts. I guess I dont want to give up and have RAI but maybe I will just have too. Any advise will be appreciated. Thanks Becky
Guest guest
Hi Becky, Actually, I don't think your liver enzymes are very high. They are elevated, but I hear they have to be somewhat higher in order to be problematic. Maybe you could switch to PTU instead, and then re-test. Some people (including me) use milk thistle to help the liver, so that's an idea. Other than RAI, there is surgery. I think that each treatment has its pros and cons, and I personally would feel more comfortable going for the surgery rather than the RAI, IF I found a surgeon who was very experienced in thyroidectomies. 4 weeks is too short to bring the thyroid down fully. It typically takes 6-8 weeks for all the excess thyroid hormone to be used up. Ideally, smooth decreases in medication doses occur until one reaches a maintenance dose. Please research all your options before choosing a permanent choice such as RAI or surgery. One place to start is the Thyroid Awareness 101 thread at Mediboard.com. Elaine 's book Graves' Disease: A Practical Approach is also very informative.
