It is really frustrating to not see any progress you can attribute to the diet and wonder if you should just chuck the whole thing and then be told, " well, you must be doing it wrong...take something else out like corn or soy...it must be cross contamination...etc. " I too have heard the horror stories...that somehow once a kid has been on the diet for any length of time that any attempt to put them back on gluten and casein will result in a psychotic break or worse...those are scary stories...but where is the basis in fact? I tend to think that they are urban legends. It's okay to be frustrated with this...this diet is hard, inconvenient and ISOLATING for most of us out there plugging along. And I for one am not certain that it has made any difference for my son after nearly one year casein free and nine months gluten free. Guest guest
I have heard similar stories also and that also scares me. the diet is no harder than any other special diet. I have other grandchildren that are diabetic. I would not change their diets just because they were difficult. And I have a sister with schizophrenia. It is in our family genes so all the more reason not to chance it. Guest guest
, We too haven't seen dramatic results with GF/CF diet except for a lot more awareness when we first took out casein. It just may take some kids guts longer to heal than others. We've been doing the diet for over a year now and I won't give up on it no matter what. I do have to say that Hunter is in a summer program with 5 other autistic boys and he's the only one of them that is calm and doesn't break down and throw tantrums all day. I attribute this to the diet and yeast control. I'm trying to educate all the other Moms there but unfortunately they're all uneducated and just don't understand. I did give one Mom our bottle of Super-Nu-Thera that Hunter couldn't tolerate and she's been giving that to her son. I really hope it helps her son. Hang in there and don't get discouraged and keep plugging along because we are going to make our kids better. Jo (South Carolina)
