Guest guest
Because I have RA (another auto-immune) I recently was unable to donate blood for a friend's account in advance of an operation. I didn't even have to mention Graves. Check with your local blood bank. Guest guest
My blood center checked and said that Graves' wasn't a problem for donating. I don't know about the beta blocker. Your best bet is to call the blood center and ask. They are the professional on that, and the rules change over time. I don't think I would do it while feeling very hyper-- it seems to me like the body is stressed enough from that alone, but I could easily be wrong. I aphorese regularly, and have found that even if I'm hypo and not feeling great, giving platelets and plasma doesn't make me any worse. Guest guest
Hi Rose, According to federal guidelines (AABB, FDA) people with autoimmune diseases are eligible to donate blood. But some local blood banks amend these rules and do not take donors with autoimmune disorders. For instance, I can't donate blood at the hospital I work at, but I can donate at the other major hospital system in town. And sometimes we borrow blood from them so having separate rules like this isn't always effective. You might check at other local hospitals or Red Cross stations in your area. Take care,Elaine
