Guest guest
Bradley has been going to the same daycare center since we moved to las vegas for 8 months. he is less than 4 months shy of 2 years old. First off he didnt get placed into the toddler (one year old room) until he was 19 months old, due to before that he didnt walk that well. ow they have moved all the kids who will be 2 years (within 4 months) old into the 2's room, but they left bradley in the toddler room as he is actually the same size or smaller than the kids who just turned one. so now he is the oldest, but the same size as the rest of them. and the other ones used to take his toys and smack at him. now he is doing the same to the younger ones. do i request to have him moved now or leave him in there until he is actually 2. He is very mild RSS, wich is why i dont post much, but any help will be appreciated. Guest guest
Been there, done that! My son, non RSS had benign hypotonia so did not walk until 26 months (he rolled) and had a walker at 22 months (crawled at 23ish months). The daycare director would not move him from the infant room until he could walk (all other kids moved at 14 mo of age). So basically I told her she was discriminating against my son. I asked would she leave him if he was in a wheelchair!? Now, my daycare is through the town so it is a public daycare run by the school system. They CANNOT discriminate. I had a meeting with her supervisor who told her she was flat out wrong and they moved him less than 2 weeks later. That director was finally fired several months later and things were great when Emerence was born. The felt she was ready intellectually for the toddler room even though she couldn't walk. The teacher were great and my biggest fear, a really huge kid named AJ, was the best thing to happen to her. He would protect her and she loved him to death. Before she could walk, they would call snack and he would go hold her hand to help her walk (okay, he was 2 - how CUTE!) and another child would take her other hand. She is pretty scrappy and looks out for herself. She started the room at about 14 lbs max, a good 10 lbs lighter than most and does really well holding her own. She also LOVES the activities. Be firm, be polite, and be informed about discrimination. Also, re read your daycare policy book before your discussion in case they suddenly pull out an " updated " copy. This is discrimination - good luck! , almost 5, hypotonia, Emerence 20 mo 18 lb 11 oz 28.5. > > Bradley has been going to the same daycare center since we moved to > las vegas for 8 months. he is less than 4 months shy of 2 years old. > First off he didnt get placed into the toddler (one year old room) > until he was 19 months old, due to before that he didnt walk that > well. ow they have moved all the kids who will be 2 years (within 4 > months) old into the 2's room, but they left bradley in the toddler > room as he is actually the same size or smaller than the kids who > just turned one. so now he is the oldest, but the same size as the > rest of them. and the other ones used to take his toys and smack at > him. now he is doing the same to the younger ones. do i request to > have him moved now or leave him in there until he is actually 2. Guest guest
Can you ask them why he hasn't been moved. Is it because of size? That shouldn't be an appropriate reason. There is way too much developmental difference from a 1s room to a 2s room. Some schools have weird things like potty training, etc. My poor son, we had to pull him from daycare and put him in a parent coop program when he was 3 because he was kept in the 2s room because he wasn't daytime potty trained yet.... You don't want them to get mad, but you can absolutely request that if the only reason they have kept him is because of size, find out their fears and concerns, and meet them at every point. Let us know what you find out. But no, you are NOT over reacting. Guest guest
Hi Paige, It seems as though we are in a similar situation. I have 4 1/2 year old twins. has RSS and Becca does not although she is behind on some things and they are both in a special needs preschool. Last year, was in a self-contained (all special needs) class and Becca was in an integrated (half special needs, half non-special needs) class of 3 year olds. This year, they moved to the 4 year old self-contained and Becca to the 4 year old integrated. However, was too advanced for his class, so they wound up placing him in the 3 year old integrated class where he is the oldest child. For , this is working out quite nicely as he is about average in size for this class. Also, with his other issues, he fits right in. They didn't want to place him in the 4 year old integrated class because they felt they were too advanced for him and they didn't want the two children placed in the same class. Can you spend some time there and see how he functions with the class he is in? Then look at the other class and see their behavior/activities and see what is a better fit for him. Good luck, Judith, Steve, (RSS) and (non RSS) 4 1/2 year old twins > > Bradley has been going to the same daycare center since we moved to > las vegas for 8 months. he is less than 4 months shy of 2 years old.
