Guest guest
Hiya Leah, Coby and twin Carlee were taken at 36 wks. Carlee was 5.7 lbs and 19 in, and Coby was 2.4 lbs and 14 in. Because he was the gestational age of a 36 wk'er he didn't have as many complications despite his size. He drank from a bottle for his first feeding and was only on a vent for a day. He spent 29 days in the NICU and came home weighing a mere 3.12 lbs. There is absolutely no way to explain or forget those days in the NICU enviroment. I remember the first time I was taken into see Coby. He was hooked up to tubes and machines and I had taken the tour to prepare for this, but it didn't help. I was on a lot of drugs from the c-section, but I can remember thinking, " wow, that's a tiny baby. I wonder what it's like for those people that have babies that small? " As much as I knew he was mine it was so hard to absorb that I had a baby like that. This was the baby you see on tv commercials for childrens hospitals. I had already had 2 big babies and then Carlee was small but she still looked like the average newborn, so my brain just couldn't connect it all. After a day with him it was like he was just any other one of my kids. You learn so quickly that even though he is that small that you care for him in the same ways. He got the same baths and feedings as Carlee. But, when he finally got to come home from the hospital, it was so hard to console him. For a month he had been in an isolette so you couldn't pick him up and cuddle him each time he was upset and he had not learned how to be comforted by it. So, in the middle of the night when he would wake up I never knew exactly what to do for him. Sometimes holding my baby made him even more upset. That was really strange for me. It didn't take long to spoil him though. Brock would hold him for an hour everyday when he came home from morning kindergarden while he watched cartoons. Now Coby is our cuddle bug. Ok, I'm just going to stop now. Guess I've went off on a tangent about this..hehehe If I thought it was challenging then, it's NOTHING compared to life with The Twin Terrors at age TWO...!
