Guest guest
Thank you for the welcome. I'm a little scared. My throat hurts and my face is swelling. I'm going to be make my first DR appointment since I left the hospital tomorrow. I should be see the doctor in a week or two. In the hospital the doctor was pushing RAI but I'm not keen to on the idea. The normal iodine made me sick. I'm glad I found the website http://valkyrie.aarg.net/. I'm looking forward to talking to everyone. Guest guest
Dionne, I recommend that you go to mediboard.com and read the Thyroid Awareness 101 thread: http://www.mediboard.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=004549 I am a bit too tired this evening to respond much, but I just wanted you to know that I read your post and I'm sorry to hear that you are having a hard time right now. As for the throat hurting, perhaps you can take some tylenol. Not sure if it will help, and perhaps you need some prednisone. I'm just not sure, so hopefully someone else will have some ideas, if not here, then maybe at mediboard. At 09:14 PM 11/3/2003, you wrote: >Thank you for the welcome. I'm a little scared. Guest guest
Thank you for your advice. I'm going to being calling to doctor today. I'm on these drugs, 600mg of propylthiouracil and 200mg of metoprolol a day. Hi Dionne, and welcome, You've already gotten lots of good advice. Thanks for mentioning valkyrie's website, that's a new one for me and I'll add it to my list. As mentioned, Elaine 's book is a great comprehensive guide and will give you more info on diet. The place to start avoiding iodine is to check your multivitamin, change to uniodized salt, and start avoiding seafood and red food coloring. Can the ER doctor who saw you start you on an antothyroid med or at least a beta blocker for heart symptoms? Two weeks seems like a long time to wait--I certainly wouldn't want to wait longer (I waited six weeks while my levels continued to rise--bad idea). Many doctors use a low-dose iodine scan to diagnoze Graves', but you can avoid the iodine exposure and have an ultrasound instead. That and the antibody test for Graves', often called TSI antibodies, are all you need for diagnosis. As you already have some eye swelling I would suggest you try the medication route rather than radioactive iodine to destroy the thyroid. That treatment can make the eye symptoms worse. Plus, Graves' disease is an problem caused by an overactive immune system, which can be healed. As a result, many people can attain remission with their thyroid gland intact. When you start an antithyroid med your dr. will need to run baseline liver and CBC (complete blood count) tests to watch for the dangerous, but rare, side effects of these meds. One sign of a problem is a sore throat. which you already have, so the baseline will be really important (I had a sore throat and extremely swollen glands during my first three months of treatment. We could fine no cause--mono? Lyme?--so we assumed it was part of the disease itself). You should start feeling much better shortly after starting an antithyroid med. In the meantime, you really need to take care of yourself. Your body's been in overdrive and you need to refuel, physically and emotionally. The letter to familes that Cindy mentioned is at http://velocitus.net/deecee/information.htm . You'l also find great info in the Files section of this group and at Mediboard--and keep asking questions here! You are on a megadose and based on how you described yourself in the welcome, I think it's likely wildly inappropriate!! 300 mg. is a normal starting dose. Many people also start on 450. I heard that the potency of PTU is basically equivalent to that of methimazole, the other ATD, just add a zero. That is, 300 of PTU = 30 methimazole. 30 methimazole is very common as a starting point. I hear 450 for PTU much more often than 45 for methimazole. Still, this really seems like way too much and being on an inappropriately high dose can bring on the dangerous side effects. DON'T let your doctor tell you PTU is not an option based on your sore throat - reducing may well end the problem. I'm not familiar with beta-blockers and their dosing. Got to wonder though if this is too high also. You're on the right track and you will feel better soon. You're educating yourself very well on this. Guest guest
Dionne, I agree with Fay. This is a huge dose. Please be careful, and ask your doctor if you can reduce it at this point; 300-450mg should bring down your levels, from what we gather. I am concerned that your doctor does not know how to use this medication, so please educate yourself about proper blood levels and symptoms of hypO to watch for.
