Guest guest
Hi All, First of all I want to thank all of you for your postings and for the caring that is evident in this group. It helps more than anyone who hasn't had to deal with a life changing illness could possibly know. Here is a question dealing with the male/female differences involving Graves. I am the male in this, 48 years old. I went to the medical Doctor today, he is a Family Practice Doctor who is also an OD(?), he did the basic exam and ordered the lab work. I am to have the orbital CT scan in the morning. During this exam he gave me a breast exam and ordered a testosterne level ($125.00 test fee)in with the rest of the blood tests. He told me that my left breast didn't feel right, but didn't suggest any other tests for this. I have spent most of this evening checking each one and trying to find what he felt, I don't feel any difference between the two. Is is possible for Graves to cause this type of problem? Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks, Del
Guest guest
Hi Del, Sorry you have to go through so much diagnostic trauma, it does get to you, huh? I know I felt totally insecure when I didn't know for sure what was happening. The med system seems to preclude doctors " sharing " their thoughts with us in advance of definitive diagnostic tests, I suspect for fear that they'll be caught out wrong (and lose their aura of invincibility or risk a law suit). So, we wait in fear and wonder. I haven't, in my nearly 10 years with GD and more than 5 in group, heard anyone else mention breast changes having to do with GD, male or female. I hope it turns out to be nothing, but at least you're getting tested and you'll soon know. In my reading and research for a cause to hyperthyroidism other than Graves' Disease for myself, I have found that prolactin can cause breast changes in men. Prolactin is produced by the pituitary gland along with TSH and a couple other hormones. I'm sure you can find info about prolactin thru medline or pubmed. I hope this is helpful information. Good luck, and let us know how all is going. Ever hopeful, AJ Diagnosed Graves' Disease June 2003. Taken PTU since late July 2003. Presently taking 1/3 of 25 mg 3 times a day. TSH 3.52 (.5- 5.5) FT4 .91 (.89-1.79)

About the testosterone - tread carefully in taking extra since I just heard a report re " andropause " (male menopause...Ladies, stop laughing!) that too much taken as a supplement may be linked to prostate cancer.
