Question - Contradicting Test Results

I was diagnosed as hyperthyroid 2 weeks ago. I have lost weight, had

a very rapid pulse, am warm all the time, etc. I am on propranolol 4x

a day. I am pretty sure that I have Graves as my twin sister was

diagnosed 3 years ago. My TSH is 0.00 and my FT3 and FT4 are high.

Here's the question: I had a thyroid ultrasound and a radioactive

iodine scan which were both normal. What does that mean? Has anyone

else had contradicting test results?

Also, I just had an antibody blood test and will know the results in

about 2 weeks. Will this tell me for sure if I have Graves? I am

obviously anxious to start treatment.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome. The antibody tests (especially TSI test) will add much more

clarity to what is going on with you. If you are positive for TSI, then you

have Graves'. Please study your treatment options before doing anything

like RAI or surgery, which are permanent. Antithyroid medication should

always be done first, and may be your preferred treatment choice, as it is

for so many of us in this group. Personally, I would not do RAI, and I

would avoid surgery if at all possible.
