Guest guest
I am definitely on a roll today now I have my new PC! Am curious as to how many Graves sufferers come across people who think they know everything about your condition and what you should do. For example yesterday I was at my quilting group and although it is not something I would tell every man and his dog, some people I am happy to talk to about it. There were some others present who work in various medical professions. One woman said to me " just have it taken out and get your husband to buy you a good set of pearls! " I was slightly taken aback at this wisdom from a nurse. One of the sales assistants in my local pharmacy also said to me " just go and have it out, like me " . Sure enough, that's why she always wears a scarf to cover her scar. My know-it-all neighbour was another one who said her friend just had it removed and all was well. I now feel like everyone thinks I am a hypochondriac(SP?) and a wimp for not opting just to " have it out " . Are there really that many people out there walking about without their thyroids? Do they all feel fantastic now and have no health problems? Somehow I don't think so. Alison Melbourne, Australia
Guest guest
Alison, My mom had hers out because of thyroid cancer. Wore a scarf all the time, had a horrible scar--but of course this was 1946, not now when the surgical technology is better. But she was seriously psychotic, and I do believe it was probably caused by a less than well regulated dose of replacement hormone. I know it's better to opt for surgery than RAI (or at least, it seems so to me!) but if you can keep your thyroid, which makes a complex bunch of hormones that have the very important job of regulating your entire metabolic system, why get rid of it and trust to a man-made substitute? Just my opinion! Guest guest
All I can tell you is that I have discovered a whole new way of looking at Grave Disease through this board...thank you all so much...I go to the endo dr. on Monday, and I am so thankful I will be " armed " with this information. Before I get in his office, I know that medication therapy is the way I will go. There is no hurry...I am fine...the tapazole has made me feel better, my health is not at risk, so what is the hurry? My GP recognizes that medication therapy is " coming back " , wow...this is a good thing.. So I think there is a movement underground to educate these physicians to what their patient population wants, verus, what they think good " medical practice " is, and they should listen.. surgery and RAI are options, but we should be fully informed (and it is the physician's job to do this, by the way), and we make our decisions based on the information and facts. Good luck to all of you...I will overcome this..the best way I can...given all my options...
