Yep, sounds like you're going to my old Dr and if you were in Houston, I'd

say chances are, you are seeing him! My old Dr did that to me prolly about

3 - 4 times in the past year and it's NOT good!

I've been told that my last Dr should have tried to wean me off the meds,

not just cold turkey. It would take me a week, maybe 2, and I'd be feeling

as awful as I did before Meds. Are you also taking Atenolol? Just because

your bloodwork shows that the levels are near normal is no reason to tell

you to just quit taking them. Is this what's happened?

Fellow listers,
I have been lurking since my diagnosis in March and I have a question.
Is there ever ANY reason for a doctor to have a patient stop taking
Tapazole cold turkey? Dosage is 30 mg a day and has been since the
original diagnosis. Today I was told to quit taking Tap all together and
no other drug was prescribed. Does this make any sense to anyone?
TIA,
Hi ,

A resounding NO!!! Don't do that. Do share your test results here so we can

help you figure you what you need. Tap MUST be reduced slowly, or you will

end up extremely hyper again. What reason were you given for this?

Terry,

I was not told why...just to do it. I even asked if I should taper off but was

told no. They called yesterday

after hours and are closed today so I don't have my copy of the blood work yet.

She did tell me that my TSH which

was 0.02 both in March and also 0.02 month ago is now 46 ???? Sounded weird but

this is all new to me. Not thinking

real clearly either. I will go by and get the copy tomorrow and post all the

results.

I am feeling really fuzzy and having problems catching my breath......maybe I

will take a tap anyway!

Thanks,

Hi,

the only reason to tell you to stop taking Tap cold turkey would be if you

had been using 30 mg more than 6-8 weeks since you'd now be hypothyroid. Your

doctor could have been confused about TSH before and kept you on an

inappropriately high dose. Most everyone has their dose reduced after 6-8 week

otherwise.

Anyway, if you've been on 30 mg you're likely having labs that are showing

hypothyroidism. You have a right to your lab results so call and ask them to fax

or mail you a copy, or just ask for them.

If you are now hypothyroid you would only be stopping meds for 2-3 days and

then continuing on a more appropriate dose. As the others here have told you,

it's not a good idea to permanently stop meds especially moving from 30 mg to

no meds for more than a few days. Even if your doctor suspected remission, he

should reduce your meds slowly. Best, Elaine

Hi ,

Now that I see this post I see that what I suspected was right.

They were misled by your low TSH those past months. It often stays suppressed

for many months and can't be used alone for monitoring ATDs. For monitoring

your FT4 and FT3 are the best tests as these are your actual thyroid hormone

levels. TSH is a pituitary hormone that helps regulate thyroid hormone levels.

It reflects thyroid function to some extent. But relying on it alone or as the

primary test parameter causes things like this to happen. You will still need

to get back on a low dose. If they wait for TSH to change to the normal range,

you'll be hyper because TSH always lags at least 6 weeks behind thyroid

hormone levels, but usually longer. take care, elaine

Hi Rose,

I started the generic verison Methimazole Tuesday evening. I asked

my doctor about the weight gain, he said it is possible that it

won't cause weight gain, and that some of his patients lost weight

on it. He also said that the weight loss is not only excess fat but

it is also muscle and bone mass loss. That could cause more problems

than having the excess pounds. I'm like you, I wouldn't mind keeping

the pounds off! (34 as of yesterday!)

Good luck with it,

Del
