Guest guest
Hi everyone, My son has been off the wall and very out of it lately..The only thing that we changed is that he has been going swimming in the pool, and we have been covering him with sunscreen..I have been using the bananna boat baby one (GF) but I am starting to wonder if maybe he is sensitive to the other chemicals in it..Does anyone know of a natural sunscreen?? Do they even make such a thing?? Please let me know if you have any info, my little boy loves to be in the pool, but he is soooo fair skin I need to put something on him..Thanks for any help!!! Guest guest
I almost hate to admit this, but I need sunscreen more than my 4yo! Her skin is a medium olive, mine is VERY fair with lots of freckles. She doesn't get to go out during the day without me, of course, and I don't go out if it's too hot. Guest guest
I have been researching sunscreens myself. I purchased the Kay brand, and my son got pretty kooky, the one time I put it on him (not a reasonable test, I know). However, most of the ACTIVE ingredients in sunblocks - the actual UV Ray " filters " , are highly phenolic, according to what I was able to find in my searches. So, even without the chemicals, dyes, perfumes, etc....it still comes down to the strong possibility that our kids might have a problem with sunscreen ( So far this summer I have managed to keep a long-sleeved T-shirt on him, a sunhat (he's only 2), and of course his swimming trunks are all " bloomers " that cover him well past the knees - LOL. I keep him in during the peak sun hours, and keep him as covered as possible - even for swimming. I'm guessing your child is older and you don't have the same flexibility as I do. There's some new research indicating that the sunblocks we've all been relying on for years are causing problems in many people (isn't that always the way it works?!). There are actually companies who manufacture very lightweight clothing to be used as UV protection. I think I will be looking into that for next year. Guest guest
Yep - he swims in a shirt. But again, he's only 2. He does " fret " a little afterwards, wanting to get dry clothes on, but we just try to distract him from it. He's getting better about it now. That's how the hats came to be also - at first he wanted to take them off and it seemed all sensory related. Now he's used to those, and we have a hard time leaving the house without a hat on him! Last week he wanted to wear a bright orange Tennessee VOLS winter knit-type cap to the store ) I have found many, many things that he was opposed to in the beginning, to the point it seemed impossible. But with some gentle soothing, some bribery, lots of positive reinforcement and a little luck....we can usually get through most foreign things. Swimming in a shirt is one example. A few others that took some negotiation but are now smooth-sailing, are: sandals (he wanted socks underneath), showers (just once in awhile if we're in a hurry and want to pull him in with us), sprinklers, elevators, bicycle helmet, lifejacket, etc. How old is your child? > > > >

Guest guest
I have tried many sunscreens for my son and the only one that does not give a reaction is Neutrogena. I have also found that the higher SPF gives him a rash. So I try to find SPF 15 and no higher than SPF 30.
