Cara

Salem is the master at this snack thing, she has a whole system

worked out! But she's away until August 7th so I'll give you my Canadian

experience!

Adam has different paperwork than you do in the states but it works out to

the same. I had him identified as having a physical disability (all that we

have in Canada...no " medical " ) and this guarantees him an IEP. Since I am

the special ed. teacher at the school, I write his IEP and fill it with

everything I can! But by law parents are supposed to " co write " the IEP (I'm

sure it's the same for the 504) so you can put what you feel is needed in

it.

Adam has a medical notation in his file due to the hypoglycemia. I had one

(idiot) principal kick up a fuss that he wanted something from a doctor in

his file " proving " he needed the snacks.........but he was just blowing

smoke and Katy wrote me a nice letter basically highlighting the needs of

RSS kids and that killed his stupid requests. But now Adam has his picture

in the staffroom along side kids who need epipens and inhalers etc. as a

medical need " eat small frequent snacks " .

OK onto the snacks. The rule of thumb is supposed to be nutrious. That is

all fine and good if you have a kid that likes carrot sticks etc. etc. Mine

does NOT!! So I try to get as close as I can. I found in our grocery stores

these containers by Glad (not sure if you have that company in the States)

but they make those containers that are re usable, dishwasher safe etc. but

a step down from Tupperware (in price!) so if they are lost it's no big

deal. So they've come out with one that has a sturdy lid and 3 partitions

inside. It's great. So in one I will put a completely sugar

snack..........like gummy bears or some such thing. Again, nutrition is key

but I live in the real world here! He needs some sugar too! So then another

one will have some kind of chips. Usually Pringles because they don't come

in crumbs and a few years ago on this site we somehow came to the conclusion

that Pringles was a more " nutritious " chip than the others. I forget why.

Then he will have a juice box in the bigger part, a couple of cookies and a

cheese string. I will alternate the contents to include these new snacks

they have now (I forget what they are called) but they are supposed to be

low in the trans fats (again my attempt at nutrition). My goal is to give

Adam as much of a selection as possible.I use to put a rice krispie square

in as well, but he's " off " them now.

So does he eat? You bet. He keeps it on his desk and munches throughout the

day. He always comes home for lunch with me each day and sometimes he gets

in the car and that container is with him and it's empty........he wants a

refill for the afternoon and on other days only a few things are eaten. I

believe he does share some of it......although I try to discourage it and

I'm sure the teacher does/did as well..........but a little bit here and

there doesn't bother me because the social part of his life is my main

worry. Small price to pay.........I just make sure that one kid isn't eating

everything and taking advantage. That hasn't happened this past year and let

me tell you with the bullies he was housed with in that classroom I'm

surprised they didn't try!!!

Adam is old enough now that he recognizes when his blood sugar is getting

low. He would have such huge mood swings (into anger) several years ago and

I would always label it " you see you feel this way because you haven't eaten

in awhile " that he has come to feel it early enough to eat something before

he goes off the deep end.

Hope that helps for you until gets back. I know she does the carrot

sticks, yogurt tubes etc. My kid won't touch the stuff. I rather him eat

than not though. Experiment at your grocery store on things that you could

try. Oh peanut butter is the absolute BEST thing for our kids (anything with

protein) but it's basically banned in all schools now anyway. It was the

best.

Oh I know this is getting long but I should mention before I got that

divided container, I use to just back his lunch bag with a ton of various

snacks (in the wrappers they came in or in sandwich bags for things like

cookies or chips) but this year his teacher remarked that it was distracting

to have wrappers around his desk or have him constantly going to the garbage

can etc. so I came up with this container (Jenn uses one which is where I

got the idea).

-- Debbie, Hi thanks for that info, I don't think is

Hypoglycemic, for as right now I don't have to worry but.... he will

eat like crazy now that he is on the G H shot, I am planning on

packing snacks also(kindergarten) and yes we do have glad wear!! lol

that let me chuckle it is amazing how different our cultures are!!

I am glad to see that there is someone that will also let their

child eat the " good stuff " lol, My does like carrots and

stuff but he loves sweets to I do have to limit them because he is

so wild!! I enjoyed your post, B is 5 years old his pic is on here

if you like to peek!! Hugs

Oh P.S. since you are a spec ed teacher do you know

if the school teacher will be able to Brush him and do joint

compressions during the day? he needs this every 2 hours and I am

going to write it in my IEP!! I hope so, his O T specialist is

going to go to the school as well every other

week!!

Hi

I don't know if the special ed. teacher will be able to brush or

not. Or rules are much different up here. More than likely you would have an

aid for that. But your American schools still have on sight nurses

(something we lost when I was just finishing grade school myself!). It's so

different up here. Then again you could get an awesome teacher who doesn't

mind doing it. I would leave that to those that live in the States like you.

Jodi might know what the rules are governing that.

Glad I could be of help!
