Guest guest
Hi . All my life I have had regular cycles, I could count the exact day I would start. About 3-4 yrs ago I had very irregular cycles. I was always a " heavy " but I would have a cycle then another right after, then on a period for 20 or more days straight. As of last July, Iv'e had no cycle whatsoever. I thought it was menopause- I'm 42 and I thought it not that uncommon. I also have had severe hot flashes. They are better now. I am newly diagnosed and know this is a symptom of Graves. I'm not on meds now because I have to wait a little over a month to see an Endo but I did ask my GP about this and he said I will most likely resume normal cycles once on meds. So don't worry too much. I doubt very much that you have any other problems in this respect. I'm no expert by far so you may want to see a gynecologist just to ease your mind. Take care. Guest guest
- Menstrual problems are very common with Graves' and thyroid conditions in general. Periods that are shorter and closer together are common with hyperthyroid, periods that are heavier and longer are usually associated with hypo. But everyone is different. Mostly, I notice changes in my cycle when I am having a change in thyroid levels. I have also experienced " starting " and " stopping " . Have period for a couple days, then it's gone for a day or two, then it's back for another day or so! If you've had other menstrual problems, it might not be a bad idea to get it checked out again just to be sure with your gyn. But likely it's thyroid related. menstrual cycle question > Hi all, > It look like I will be having an extended cycle. > For the women, have you experienced periods, that start and stop, then it > keps going. > I'm currently on the maintanance dose of methimazol. > Basically, I just want to know if people have had many changes and > complications related to their menstrual cycles because of graves? > I've always had problems with my cycle, since way before my diagnosis. > Can someone could have some other gynocological, or automeune thing be > wrong, along with graves. > Any information would be appreciated, and you may also contact me > privately as well. > thank you in advance. > r. green > > ________________________________________________________________ > The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! > Surf the web up to FIVE TIMES FASTER! > Only $14.95/ month - visit www.juno.com to sign up today! > > > ------------------------------------- > The Graves' list is intended for informational purposes only and is not intended to replace expert medical care. > Please consult your doctor before changing or trying new treatments. > ---------------------------------------- > DISCLAIMER > > Advertisments placed on this yahoo groups list do not have the endorsement of > the listowner. Guest guest
Hi , There are definitely ways that Graves affects our menstrual cycle. Listed in the Symptom list on the home page under hyper symptoms is: " Menstrual Cycle Changes - Absence of flow when normally expected is called Amenorrhea. Scanty flow is known as Oligomenorrhea " . Increased flow is a hypO symptom. Also there seems to be some increase in polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) among GD sufferers, why I'm not sure. I had this disease when I was 25 or so--20 years before I was diagnosed with GD. It's worth getting a GYN chec-up if you're worried about your cycle. The extended symptom list is well worth copying for your personal files. It will give you lots of reassurance and a good reference guide. You can access it at Yahoo groups, on our home page (where you signed up to join the group). Guest guest
I have noticed how being hyper and hypo affects my cycle too, although my Endo seems to poo poo the connection. I just get a blank stare ...He thinks my TSH is too low, but he did agree to leave me alone at least until September because I am feeling so good, (my cycle is every 28 days to the day, and last about 4 days, little cramping), just like it use to be before this Grave's business. Jen M Menstrual cycle question > > Hi , > > Changes in my menstrual cycle have mirrored how hyper or hypo I was (in my case based on TSH), and were convincing evidence for my endo that I was still hyper with a TSH of 2.5 and FT4 and T3 in the normal range. > > I was lucky to start with a regular, though short, cycle. The more hyper I get, the farther apart my periods; the more hypo, the closer together (15 days for a while, TSH of 6-8) and the more profuse and painful. Now in my " slightly hypo " state they're almost back to normal spacing. > > Graves' has made me realize I should find a great gynecologist as well, as there are many issues that interact with Graves' symptoms (osteoporosis, etc.). > > best wishes, > > > > >
Guest guest
Hi all, thank you for answering my question about menstrual cycles and graves. My gp thinks that I have pollycystic ovarian disease or syndrome. she wants to wait till graves is more stable, before fixing it. Anyone else had this experience. How was it treated? Is this common in women with graves? The thing is that my gp thought that I might have PCOS but I was losing weight instead of gaining. So, this is how I got to my indo., and recieved the graves diagnosis. Could my GP be on to something? I know I will be relieved when things are straightined out with my health. I'm tired of people treating me like I am crazy. I'm done rambling for now. Take care and thanks for your support and help. melissa r. green On Thu, 22 May 2003 19:46:45 -0500 " Jen Merhar, The best things in life happen in the heart. Guest guest
Hi , I mentioned in a recent reply to you that I had had PCOS. Well, I had it back in 1976, when I was young and it freaked me out completely. At the time I was working as a short-order cook, counter service, and one of my customers (a regular) was the first acupuncturist and herbalist in our area. Anyway, long story short--he treated me for about 6 months, acupuncture every 5 days, herbs constantly-and all the symptoms of PCOS disappeared. To the point where the gyno said " we must have misdiagnosed you " . Never had any further problem with it afterwards, either. It's probably the pivotal reason I'm so skeptical about modern medicine, and so pro-alternative. At least that alternative. That experience and the same acupuncturist curing my hopeless, dying baby of asthma six years later convinced my husband to study acupuncture and herbal medicine himself. That's now his profession.
