I know this may be sort of be rude to ask here considering some are

really going through some stuff but I would like to know and don't

know where else to ask. So sorry beforehand.

I am in remission from Graves since end of April. I still have my

thyroid. My question is:

Would exercise be good or bad for me? Something like low impact

aerobics like Jazzercise if I pace myself? I am on a fairly

restrictive diet for my Graves(self imposed and still cannot find a

all purpose vitamin) but need something to stay a little fit( my labs

are good) I would prefer swimming but there is not anyplace near me.

Thanks, Sandy

Sandy,

Exercise is not OT, as far as I'm concerned. My endo said " as long as your

thyroid levels are in range, it is fine. So as long as you have no other

medical conditions that preclude exercise, and your doctor hasn't advised

against it, why not? Start of slow, even slower than you can do, and work

your way up. That way it won't be a shock to your system, and will decrease

the chance of injury (strains, etc.).

Sandy -

Not a rude question at all! A very good one in fact. Exercise is important

for us, although sometimes it's hard if you're feeling hypo and lousy. With

Graves', we lose bone and muscle mass, so it is important to get some type

of exercise - anything you will enjoy doing and keep doing! Make sure that

you have the OK from your doctor before starting, though. For example, if

your heartrate was still high from being hyper, it's best to get that under

control before exercising so as not to stress your heart, etc. But if your

doctor gives the green light, by all means, start exercising.

Good luck with whatever exercise you choose! It's really hard to get

started, especially if you're not at your ideal thyroid levels. For myself,

that's been hard, but now that I've started, I have seen a lot of

improvement in my muscle strength.

Hi Sandy,

I think as soon as you have levels under control exercise is a good thing. I

started with walking, although even at my worst I still did tai chi every

day too. Now I not only walk, I swim and also do some physical therapy work,

the result of an auto accident I had. Exercise makes us feel better, build

muscle, too. If you're in remission, there's absolutely no reason not to do

what you like.

--Thanks all, I appreciate all the comments. I feel weak all the time

and think this may help. I will take it very slow though. It involves

a little hand weights and I am in my 40's. Somewhere I read this is

really good for strength. My labs say all is well but some days I

wonder. Thanks, Sandy

It does take some time for your body to catch up with your labs. Give it

time, but don't push your self too much. We can easily over do it, and then

it takes us longer to recover.
