Guest guest
Hi all, I have a problem with my non-RSS daughter and medicine. Whenever she needs to take medicine for something (right now she has a horrible cough) she throws up. She tries to take the medicine, swallows it, and about 30 seconds later vomits. We have tried taking medicine from a spoon, a syringe and mixed with grape juice. She does throw up easily. She threw up last night just from coughing. Becca is 4 1/2 years old. Any ideas? Guest guest
My non RSS daughter was exactly like this. It was horrible as she often had fevers as a baby (or so it seemed to this panicky " first time " mom). I ended up using suppositories. It was the only way I could get Tylenol into her. It is actually really easy to do with babies. I would just lie her on her back and insert the suppository. It worked like a charm. Of course back then (she just turned 15) we didn't have all the fancy thermometers we do now and I use to do her temperature anally as well. So I was use to working " in that area " ! LOL Becca I see is 4 1/2 years old, so have you tried the chewables? The good news is they do grow out of this. She still detests taking medicine and if it's liquid I hear her gagging away but it stays down! Debby Medicine and Non RSS Child > Hi all, > > I have a problem with my non-RSS daughter and medicine. Guest guest
Does your daughter have anything in her stomach before giving her the medicine? Maybe toast, milk or something. Also ask your pharmacist if there is anything they can add to it for the flavoring. I had the same problem with my daughter and what I do sometimes is give her a little then water or juice or pediasure and then finish it off and another drink. I wish I could be of more suggestions or help. Good luck B 4 1/2 RSS and Kelli 2 Non RSS > Hi all, > > I have a problem with my non-RSS daughter and medicine. Guest guest
We have the same problem with our non-RSS son, Tyler. Major gag reflux. As an infant, it was horrendous, as a toddler even worse -- took 2 of us holding him down, prying his jaw open, and him using his tongue to sweep and push back out the medicines. If the medicines were antibiotics for ear infections, etc. - we now resort to a shot. Sounds horrible, but it is over quickly, and in every case but one, it worked. Now, with Tylenol, Motrin, etc. we give him " options. " Because of a history of febrile seizures (6 or 7 of them but none since he was 5 or 6 years old) -- he HAS to take the meds. He can take it by chewable (these are great, and you can Cough and Cold and plain Tylenol or Motrin ones); by liquid; or in the case of fever reduction, Mom can put the medicine in your bottom. Sadly, with the fever, he actually chooses the bottom sometimes (Feverall suppositories). The chewable ones are the best. For situations that he can't get a shot for (bad insect bite infection), we resorted to Coca Cola as a bribery. He takes the medicine and gets a glass of Coca Cola right afterwards to wash the taste away (doesn't normally get Coke in our house). I hope one piece of info in this hodge podge of advice will work for you. I know how frustrating it can be, as you beg and plead and they spit it all up. Guest guest
Judith, Have you tried some of the new meds that dissolve in the mouth in seconds without chewing? I don't know which ones there are exactly, but I know we have used this version of Zofran with Max when he cannot tolerate oral meds due to vomiting. We put the tablet under his tongue and it is absorbed that way. I know there are over the counter meds like this, too. Jodi Z.
