Here's the deal with stress: often we can pinpoint the most stressful

trigger (e.g. if one develops GD post-partum, or soon after losing a

loved one, getting a new and terrible boss etc.). BUT, we can't always

eliminate the trigger, even if we can clearly identify it so we may jsut

have to try to work on how we react to stress. I personally would and did

take this as a wake up call not only to get my act together physically

(whole foods, exercise, supplements) but emotionally.

I would start with yoga and trying to get some natural sunlight daily.

Laugh a lot - rent videos, buy/ check out books that give you a good

belly laugh and incorporate this into your schedule. (I have 2 binders

full of comic strips and articles - I call them my Norman Cousins files.)

Something else that has helped me tremendously are daily or almost daily

emails I get - from humor to inspiration. (Don't get yourself on so many

lists that you'll be swamped - that'll be counterproductive.) I have

some favorites but not having internet access what I know of must just be

the tip of the iceberg.

take care, Fay

Hi Angie,

Stress is a well-established cause of Graves' disease. Stress affects your

immune system in many ways and they all contribute to the development of

autoimmune disorders.

There are several studies suggesting that people who develop GD have poorer

coping mechanisms for dealing with stress. Whether that's true or not, studies

show that stress reduction techniques, such as meditation, yoga, tai, chi,

proper nutritional support, certain vitamins, can all help reduce the untoward

effects of stress.

Many of the symptoms in hyperthyroidism, such as anxiety and nervousness, may

also make us have a harder time coping with day to day stress. Take care,

Elaine
