My name is Tosha and I'm a mother of a 9 year old girl named who has

Graves Disease and has just been diagnosed after her great grandmother noticed

her thyroid was very large and swollen. I have never known anyone with or heard

of this disease before and I am expected to make a decision by this Friday on

whether or not to treat her condition with the RAI or to put her on some kinds

of medicines. I would appreciate any and ALL responses and I hope to get many

different opinions on this as soon as I can. I am not really sure what the

" best " route to take is considering there are overwhelming amounts of

information and I'm not sure what to think or believe anymore. I WAS leaning

toward the RAI because the doctors at Riley's Children's Hospital are saying

that is what they think I should do. They say she will have to go to the

hospital with every sore throat. Is this true? Or just when she has a fever?

What should I expect things to be like for us now? PLEASE respond to this

email, as I am really confused and unsure of what to do and don't have much time

to make my decision.

& Thank you and God bless all who take the time to respond.

DO NOT let them give your 9 year old RAI, or pressure you into making a

decision " by Friday " !!!!! Do NOT make medical decisions because of doctor's

convenience. do NOT condemn your daughter to a life of potential problems

because some doctor wants to do the easy thing!

I've just posted off-group to another person considering RAI, and I'm pooped

at this point. At this point I just have to say it is your JOB as a mother

to do ALL the research. Nothing about GD requires immediate drastic

intervention! No child should be given RAI. I'm going to start screaming if

I don't get off here, sometimes I feel like the medical community is a total

farce. I'll let others take up the baton now...but do go to the group home

page and look at the 'top 20 reasons not to have RAI' for starters.

Hi tasha,

My brother had gd as a child.

The first choice was medication.

He is currently in the milletary, and is fine.

What is the doctor thinking of?

Wouldn't ri effect your daughter in so many ways.

Since she is so young.

I'm glad that you found this group.

It has been very helpfull to me.

Since my diagnosis last september.

I hope that the same will be for you and your daughter.

R. Green
