sheesh he should be able to put you on beta blockers at the very least - and

he should be able to consult with the endo and see what to do while you are

waiting for you appt if he doesn't know what to do - your case sounds pretty

bad - if you are feeling really bad - or get worse then remember this - get

in to an emergency room and they will put you on beta blockers and ATDs.

There is a danger in not getting treatment - it's called thyorid storm - you

need to watch out for this.

Ok, if he won't give you betas then you might try hawethorne berry - it

takes a little while (a couple of weeks) to build up in your system but it

will help protect and regulate your heart and may help with the shakes too.

also in the meantime, you will want to avoid as much iodine as possible.

other things to avoid are caffeine and chocolate and sodas and artificial

sweetners and sugar.

You should try to find a good mulit vitamin with minerals that doesn't have

idione but does have copper in it. If you can't find a regular one, see if

there is a prenatal without iodine and with copper - you might have better

luck finding one in that category.

You should try to eat several meals a day - maybe every few hours and make

sure each one has protein and fat in it - this will help keep your body from

eating your muscles - which is probably what is happening if you are losing

so much weight already... it goes through your fat first and then your

muscles.

There are herbs you can take - bugleweed, motherwort and lemonbalm - but you

should have an ND help you with dose amount - and the stuff you buy in the

healthfood store is not as good as the stuff you get from an ND. There is

also an amino acid that blocks the use of thyroid hormone in your cells -

but it's only a temporary bandaid to use while waiting for the herbs or ATDs

to kick in - it's called L-Carnatine. If you were to only take this, your T3

would just build up in your body with no way to get out - not good either.

Hope this helps. And I hope you find a way to get your doctor to help - or

get a new one....

-- Re: i just got my uptake results

--thank you pam-- but i am kinda stuck waiting-- my dr doesnt know

much about it and she didnt put me on any meds. i cant get into the

dr which is a 2 hr drive anyway before then-- i am leaving for 2

weeks in july.

Im trying to do some research that is why i am here but i am very

confused about the whole thing.

Im trying to sort out everything but when i spend time trying to look

into things it just depresses me. :(

Could anyone tell me anything about any alternative meds or herbs i

Hi Yvonne,

I agree with Pam, that you need to get evaluated (and hopefully treated)

sooner than August. The sooner the better, so that you can be on your way

to better health. Your health is more important than anything, and so where

there is a will, there is a way. I have just started on an ATD (PTU), and

so far so good.

Looks like you will need to be proactive in your health care, but that is

to be expected, and not a bad thing. I hope Pam's suggestions help, as they

are good ones! Is there a hospital near you? Maybe you can make an

appointment with a doctor who is located in the area you are going to in July.

Yes, that was the scariest part for me too and what got me in to see a

doctor - you can do permanent damage to your heart if it's not treated. And

also, until you get your thryoid levels in normal ranges, you do not want to

do any exercise at all - nothing that will cause your heart extra stress -

it's already pumping at full capacity.

Deep breathing or meditation are good tools to use when it's getting out of

control and you need to calm down... yoga can be good too, but you will have

to avoid any of the strenuous posses until you are doing better.

Good luck,

Pam B.

-- Re: i just got my uptake results

Well i am going to be in alaska and i dont think there is anyplace to

go do that there. i already take a mega multi- vitamin from gnc--

it had lots of b vitamins but unfortunately it also has iodine. i

have to see what i can do about that. i feel tons better when i take

them regularly. just gives me much more energy -- but i have been

taking these for about 2 years now-- i was having female problems and

always bleeding-- 3 out of 4 weeks so i started taking vitamins

then. i had been on a strong dose of bc to correct that problem--

for just over a year and then i started to have high blood pressure

all of a sudden and that is when i started to lose weight fast for no

reason at all. I am going to try to get my dr to put me on a beta

blocker -- i have been having fast heart beats and pounds hard and

just the last few days i have been having pains. To me that is the

scariest part.

Thanks for the info and you guys are great im really glad to have

found you.

Best wishes to all that have this problem--

Just don't want to be misunderstood - deep breathing is NO SUBSTITUTE for

proper medical care - you NEED to get your doctor to give you the beta

blockers at a minimum - or you need to see a new doctor asap.

Good news Yvonne - I've had such a bad feeling for you I'm glad to hear you

are going to the ER. Have them run a full thyroid panel and liver panel -

get Free T3 and Free T4 and ask them to run antibodies for graves as well -

TSI and TPO and anti-thyroglobulin.

Do not let them rush you into RAI - where they use radio-iodine to kill your

thyroid - tell them you want beta blockers and anti-thyroid drugs so that

you will have time to research your options and make an informed decision -

that you are not ready for a permanent - irreversible - treatment.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

I am glad. I was concerned about you not going for treatment. I suggest you

bring Pam's e-mail with you, so that you remember to ask them to do

everything! You definitely want baseline lab values for your liver, WBC,

CBC, and kidneys, in addition to thyroid levels (esp. FT4, and FT3), and

the antibodies. This is important when you are starting the meds (ATDs).

Be aware that many doctors in this country are pro-RAI, and they make it

sound like a snap. That is not true for many, as you will see by reading up.
