Guest guest
Well, I had another set of labs last week and this time I made a follow-up appointment with my doctor. I am not feeling well at all... Increased anxiety, mild depression, lots of headaches, very achy, tired all the time... I guess I feel a lot like I do when I am hyper except without the trembling hands, sweating and accelerated heart rate. So I wanted to talk to my doctor about this... As it turns out my FT3/4 are still sliding down. I am now on the looooowww end of normal. And, for the first time since I was diagnosed in October, I actually had a READABLE level of TSH! I've been at <.05 for forever. But this time my TSH was actually at .1!! Now I know my TSH is still low (.3 being the low end of normal), but I'm wondering if even this tiny rise coupled with my lowering FT3/4 could be an indication that I am/was on my way to being hypo and that's why I feel so awful... Anyway, because the values are coming along and I'm not feeling well my doctor thought it would be a good time to throw Synthroid in the mix to see if it improves how I feel and to get us into BRT. So, as of tomorrow I will be on my regular 150mg of PTU per day plus .025g (or maybe mg??? So hard to read the doctor's writing!) of Synthroid. God willing I will feel better and shed some of these extra pounds that PTU put on me (my doctor said it would help... I gained 25lbs. on PTU and nothing would prevent it or take it off!) and be on my way to feeling better. Sooo... Any insight that you might have as to how I may feel on Synthroid as well or what the side effects are would be greatly appreciated! Also, if anyone can shed some light as to why I feel so icky lately (even with a hyper TSH reading and normal FT3/4 readings could I be going hypo) I would be grateful! Thanks so much for all your help. Clair Diagnosed with Graves in 1995 BRT remission 1997 Relapse diagnosed 10/02 150mg PTU (50mg 3x day) since 11/02 Adding .025g Synthroid as of tomorrow! Guest guest
Hi Clair - Hopefully the Synthroid will make you feel a bit better, and it's good that they're starting out with a little bit at a time. I suspect the reason you're feeling lousy is the TSH coming back. My FT4 and FT3 firts came back to normal and then several months later I had my first measurable TSH. I remember when the TSH first came back up, I felt MISERABLE! I went for labs and FT4 was low end normal, and the TSH was only .91. But it was the first time I'd had a measurable TSH in about 9 months. For me anyway, when that TSH first starts coming up, it really hits hard. I suspect it from the body being so used to not having the TSH (or having it be so low as to be ummeasurable) that it's a shock when it hits the system so to speak. Elaine has said that we can feel hyper or hypo when we change levels because of how it feels to the body. If you're going from the low level TSH to a higher level TSH, your body interprets that like a change from a hyper state to a hypo state (or maybe a less hyper state). So to the body, it " feels " like it's hypo even if your lab results are completely in the normal range. That pretty much describes what happened to me. My levels were completely normal, but I felt awful! Once the body got used to the TSH being there again, it did get better. But hopefully the Synthroid will do a better job of that for you. Don't be surprised if you still feel lousy for a while longer, but once your body gets used to the new changes, you should start feeling better - and once the Synthroid starts kicking in! Good luck, hope you feel better soon! Starting Synthroid with PTU! > Well, I had another set of labs last week and this time I made a > follow-up appointment with my doctor. Guest guest
Thanks so much . I understand how the subtle changes can make you feel awful. But explaining to someone else that you feel terrible when your labs are normal in one area and still too low (TSH) in another kinda makes people look at you funny =) Anyway, I don't feel anything noticable yet (it's only been 3 doses of Synthroid). I suspect it will take some time just as it did when I first started PTU. But with enough luck, I'll have some energy back and some relief from the constant headaches soon. In the 8 months since I started treatment, I had about 3 really GREAT months, so I know it is possible for me to feel good. But getting there can be tricky. Thanks for the input and advice!
