Guest guest
Hi Stella, There are few things to ask. 1). What size needle do they recommend. The smaller the better. We use a #31 guage needle for our son. 2). When do they recommend giving the shot. Most doctors say in the evening to mimick when your body release growth hormone naturally. 3). Can you give the shot to your child while he/she is sleeping. Doctors are split on this one. Ours said it was OK to give our son his shot after he went to sleep but to get his permission for doing it that way. 4). Most growth hormone must be refrigerated. How long before the shot should you take it out of the refrigerator. The cooler it is the more it stings, but you can't let GH get too warm either. Also, what do you do if you leave it out too long? I know that many of us can answer these questions for you but it would be interesting to see what your doctor says. I hope this helps Ken M > > Hello everyone, > Mounir and I will be going to our first class on how to give > a her shot of GH on Monday at Children's Hosptial of LA and I > was wondering if there are any questions I should ask? > Thank you for all your help. > > stella
Guest guest
Hi Stella, We just started our son Coby on GH about 7 wks ago. I had talked to everyone about all aspects of the shots. The best devices, the best time, but the one thing that slipped by me. At the training they told me to rotate injection sites between both legs, both butt cheeks, and both arms. I had not spoken with any of the other parents here about location and my first 2 nights giving Coby his shots were horriable because I was giving them in his arms. He doesn't havbe enough fat on his arms so it hurt worse. I actually have gotten to the point that I only give his shots in his bottom because he doesn't even notice them there. Would make a good question for them. le, mom to: Shye almost 10, Brock 8, Coby(rss) & Carlee 2 Coby's stats: 20.2 lbs, 31 3/4 in, Humatrope GH, & Periactin
Guest guest
Max gets his shots only in his thighs. For years they were the only place that had enough fat for the shots. We could have done them on his butt, but he was pretty much against that. We wanted him to feel as if he had control over something, so we let him choose. Dr. H. said that rotating thighs each night is fine as long as he does not have too much bruising or bumps from the shots. In 13 years we have not had a problem. Once in awhile he gets a black and blue mark, but that is normal. By the way, you can also do them in the stomach, but OUCH! The thought makes ME cringe! Guest guest
Stella, Good luck on your appointment. We started our daughter, Abby, on GH at the end of April this year. We were so nervous about the appointment to learn how to give her the medicine that I'm not sure I remember having any questions. The nurse who trained us was excellent and even injected a dose of the medicine out onto the table so we could see how much would be going into Abby's body. She gave us their standard instructions and cheat sheets on the medication and then also gave us helpful hints of her own. She gave the standard instructions on rotating the shots, but as I learned from this website, it's okay to use only a couple of locations such as the thighs. We have only given Abby shots in the thighs (once in the butt, against her protest, to try and convince her it was a better choice) and when the doctor examined her after five months she said her thighs looked great and she couldn't even see the injection sites. I have gotten excellent advice from this website. Our doctor is great, but she is pretty new to GH. A couple of questions you might think about are how often they will require a bone age scan and what your insurance company requires for renewal of the prescription. I don't know if the person doing the training will have these answers, we got them from our doctor who didn't take part in the training. Guest guest
We were shown how to do the shots by the staff at Dr H's former office. They told us to only give the shots in his thighs because that's where he had the most fat. Guest guest
Hi Stella My daughter has been on genotropin for 3 months. Our nurse said it is fine just to rotate between the thighs, multiple sites are really needed for diabetic kids who require several shots a day. She also said there is no need to pinch up the skin. We use alcohol swab but let it dry completely before the shot. My daughter (2 yr today) does not react at well when we give the shot, and even smiles as we count '1001, 1002, 1003 " loudly before taking the pen out. Only one night we gave the shot while she is asleep because we went out and she fell asleep on the way back, the swab woke her slightly but the shot did not. Now on evenings that we go out with her (and we do that a lot!!), we give the shot early before we leave the house. The shots are a breeze, Sabina mother of Naomi > > > > > > > > > Hello everyone, > > Mounir and I will be going to our first class on how to give > > a her shot of GH on Monday at Children's Hosptial of LA and > I > > was wondering if there are any questions I should ask? > > Thank you for all your help. > > > > stell
