Guest guest
It's been awhile since I had some bloodwork done. My last endo was very obnoxious. He actually made me laugh. He determined that it was time for RAI. I refused it. He then informed me that " I was the only person on the east coast that hadn't done this with this problem ... " . I told him then he needed to get out more often since many informed people are opting out of this. I simply refuse to tolerate these ridiculous scare tactics. I don't view any doctor as god and what they suggest is not a command. I make the final decision and their " opinion " is just that - an opinion.<br> Anyway I did get my PTU perscription but knew I had to find another doctor. I could go on and on about this idiot doctor - dated testing etc.. The only reason I went back to him was to get the PTU perscription. The endo before that did the right testing BUT I was not able to spend hours at her office plus they were totally paranoid with giving you the results. No kidding, my last appointment with her was at 6PM. I didn't get in to see her till 9PM. I couldn't deal with that. I had a two children with me - nearly 2year old and a four year. Also they'd call me about the results and make a big deal of making sure I was the patient over the phone and then telling me to make an appointment - which I already had anyway. They had my test results in front of them which is where they got my number yet refused to give the results over the phone, fax or through the mail. I just couldn't deal with such irrational paranoia nor the ridiculous wait time. So I went to a Internal medicine D.O.. Over the phone I was told he handled thyroids too. He opted to go the allopathic route and recommended I see an Endo and get RAI. Huge sigh. He did request the right testing and here are the results: TSH .019 (.350 - 5.50) T4 Free 1.40 (.61 - 1.76) TPO AB 1002 (0-34) Thyroid Antithyroglobin AB 891 (0-40) T3 Free 4.1 (2.3 -4.2) I'm used to different ranges but what shocked me is the antibody levels. I had had this test done before but the results were something like TPO >70 with no exact number. I've been on PTU. Of late I started takeing three 50 mg a day. Does the PTU lower the antibody level? Will this high level be affecting my eyes? Will I get a goiter if I remain on PTU? I also have M.S. and on no medication. Will the antibodies speed up the mylin (sp) sheath deterioration? I've heard this. I've also heard that with M.S. a thyroid problem happens - hyper or hypo. It's been over two years since I had an MRI and a spinal tap which confirmed M.S.. I refused medication since all I have is occassional tiredness and a once in awhile my right leg gets stiff. I don't consider that a big deal. I've also discovered Osteo Bi-Flex with glucosimine (1500 mg), Chrondroitin (1200 mg) and MSM (1000 mg) to solve the leg stiffness problem. DHEA, 25MG solves my tiredness problem. So overall I'm not concerned about the M.S. but will propably seek out a Neurologist to do another MRI. The M.S. and Graves' did not affect my pregnancy. In fact, without using ANY fertility drugs I had my daughter at age 45. All I can say is vitamin/minerals, a nutritious diet and exercise made all the difference in the world for me. That's a story in and of itself. So what I am wondering is what's going on with these levels? ANy suggestions on alternative apporaches would be welcome as well. I'm sort of curious on NMT (NeuroModulation Technique). I don't understand what it is but heard it was helpful. Since I don't find the allopathic or as I like to call them the allopathetic crowd helpful I'd like to explore other options. This destroying of a perfectly good thyroid reminds me of the good old days where as a child I often had a strept throat and the solution at that time was to remove the toncils. I refused that as well. Now they acknowledge that we need our toncils and that this is not a sound " opinion " . Since RAI isn't the ONLY option out there isn't there an Endocrinology society or something where they might discuss that RAI isn't the only option and that taking ATD's won't kill you? I see little difference in taking a maintence dose of PTU or Tap instead of Synthroid. It seems to me that if they can't solve the problem (which is typical - ignore the root cause) then the next best thing is if the organ is removable or destroyable - then do that and create a problem that they can control. I believe it is all about control and $$$. In any event I hope you can shed some light on this. I also called it to the attention of Pam too since I believe she engages in alternatives and pays attention to nutrition. If I am wrong, do accept my aplogies. Also I recall a wonderful woman, Jody. I don't see her name here. She too is a wonderful person. Is she still participating here? Best Regards, P.S. Please pardon typos. I wrote this very quickly.
