Guest guest
Debbie, My son has had a Mic-key button for over 10 years now. I have never had that happen before. Are you sure it was the actual button that was clogged & not the tubing from the feeding bag or the attachment tubing? On occasion, I have had a flow error due to the tubing being a little gunky or even the feeding bag pinching off. Another question for you - how often do you change Mollie's g-tube? We change 's every 3 months or sooner if there is a problem with it. Kim C. > > I am looking for any suggestions from those of you that may be > using a mic-key button. Guest guest
--Hi Kim, Yes I am sure that it was the button. ALl the tubing and the formula flowed fine without a problem. I even changed the bags, cleaned the pump, pretty much troubleshooted everything I could think of. And then eventually made it all the way down to the button itself. Removed the button and replaced it and everything worked fine. Typically I have changed the button every three months as you mentioned. However this time this one only lasted 6 weeks. I have been researching most of the day. She was started on prilosec back in August. It is in a liquid form prepared by the pharmacy. But is there some chemical reaction that is making the tube clog, I do not know. ANyone who has any input I am willing to listen. Maybe this is just a fluke. Guest guest
Debbie What did the old button look like when you changed it, did it have an obvious blockage, i just wonder if you could see a build up inside or something wrong with the valve inside. Do you know the company rep you could discuss this with, I have sent back old buttons if we have had an unusual problem eg liam tube often looks eroded on the outside if its in longer than 3 months, he actually starts to bleed more, we think his gastric juices eat away at it. If its something unusual you may get a replacement for the old one. Jody > > > > > > I am looking for any suggestions from those of you that may be > > > using a mic-key button. Guest guest
--Thanks Jody, I did take a good look at it. It had a definite blockage to it. I didn't think about talking to the rep about it. I am just trying to avoid it from happening again. And to the best of my knowledge I didn't remember alot of comments of this happening to others. Thanks for your input. Guest guest
Hi Debbie, Our uses an AMT mini button, but I think the concept is the same with either style. We have had B's button clog a couple of times. One time, his residual was very thick. I think he had a cold at the time. When I asked on the g-tube site, they told me to take pipe cleaner, and run it through the button. This worked. The second time it clogged his residual seemed to have cuddled formula in it, and this clogged the button. Both time I used the pipe cleaner, and reinserted the same button. It seemed to work. The major problem that we seem to have is that the valve in the buttons often doesn't work, even when they're new. As I understand it, the valve is supposed to stop back flow from the button, but we always have the problem of leaking when we disconnect the tube. We don't worry about using the pipe cleaner because the valve doesn't seem to work anyway. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Hi Debbie:-) I have had a lot of experience with tubes clogging. The best thing I found to prevent it was to just caring a 3 ml syringe of water and about every hour or two shout some water into the tube. I found that it helped to keep the tube open for longer periods of time. I have watched surgeons really put a lot of pressure into the tube even if it squirt back all over the place. They would get them to work. The water will adsorb quicker into the system than the formula so the issue of volume sensitivity is not that bad. The added benefit is that doing this will help prevent dehydration and in some cases help the bm's stay a bit softer. I hope I did not repeat since I did not read all the replies. Guest guest
--Thanks , No you did not repeat yourself or anyone elses reply and I am thankful to all who have taken the time to lend their two cents. I was afraid to use to much water, thinking that it would fill her up too much and she would start vomiting. I didn't even think about the bm's. An added bonus since that is a problem that despite mirilax we can't seem to get a handle on but that is another day. Thanks for the advice.
