Smoking and Graves

I think I read a post from someone who also was diagnosed shortly

after quitting, but I can't find that message again. Hope it wasn't

all in my mind, although even so, it was a great help to me. I tried

to find an old site that talked about quitting smoking and Graves, but

alas, couldn't remember the url for it. Does anyone remember a woman

who made up her own web site about thyroid disorders? I think her

name might be . . . we've mentioned her site on this board

before.

Although I could not find that site, I did find a huge amount of

articles re the link between smoking, Graves and TED, including

several linked back to Elaine. I don't think there were as many a

couple of years ago. I scared myself silly - I swear my eyes started

hurting!

I'm not so worried about going hyper from quitting anymore. I'm much

more concerned about quitting asap. I still think there may be more

than coincidence in the relationship between quitting smoking and the

onset of Graves. I don't think quitting smoking causes Graves, but

have read about several people who were diagnosed shortly after

quitting. However, it's totally academic since not quitting is so

much worse in so many many ways.

Not quite sure where my brain is tonight and determined not to smoke,

Hi -

I think you're talking about Shoman's site. It's at

http://thyroid.about.com.

Take care,

To all,

There's a little known or used device called " Nicotrol Inhaler " made by McNeil

that has helped many people stop smoking where other things had failed. It is

an inhaler which comes with 10 mg. nicotrine cartridges. It's something you

can put your hands on, put in your mouth, and take a deep whiff of. It worked

for me when In stopped. I would wait until I was in agony from wanting to

smoke, find a nice comfortable spot, and take a few wonderful drags from my

security blanket inhaler. A few drags was all it would take and the " hit "

would last for many hours. I still have 37 cartridges left from the 42 that

came in the box.

Unfortunately, the Natrol Inhaler is a prescription Rx item and insurance may

not cover it. Check it out on the internet.

With all my loving support to anyone trying to stop smoking and to everyone

else as well. Zoey

Hi -

I had tried to quit in Feb 03 and put on 25 lbs in a few weeks. I am also on

tap. The tap dose was reduced and I couldn't stand the weight gain from

quitting so I started smoking again.

I think having mild Graves for years deteriorated my muscles (the furnace for

burning calories) so I'm working toward building muscles. I presently feel

really good (getting a lot of natural light, excersize and taking the sups as

well as tap.) I'm also on several types of aminno protien mixes. After 1 month I

can see the muscle tone returning - the weight is coming off! Last week 7 lbs

without any Graves symptoms getting worse.

Also a note about quitting- I thought quitting smoking and weight gain was

more a symptom of Hashimoto's. I know the weight gain might have been from too

much tap but the 2 of them might have been contributors to the rapid weight

gain.

Thanks , that was it. Can't imagine why it blanked out in my

brain. Here are just a couple of interesting articles:
