Dear Jing,

My son Max is 16 and going into grade 10. I am surprised that your

son Jojo is going into grade 5 if he is 13. Did he start school

late? Is your system different than ours? Did he repeat any

grades? Usually at 13 a child in the US is in 7th or 8th grade.

That being said, many of our RSS children are mainstreamed. Max is

in a regular high school, but he is in " replacement classes, "

meaning he is in smaller classes with a special ed teacher and

working at a slower pace. That is because Max has some learning

disabilities and ADD. But when he is with the other kids in study

hall, lunch, just hanging around, he is treated well and the kids

seem to really like him. He is happy and feels secure there.

At the age of 13, however, kids here are in middle school or junior

high, depending on the school district. That is a tough time for

all the kids. They all feel inadequate, self-conscious and try

their best to fit in. It is an awkward stage in life in general.

It is hard to say whether or not Jojo would have any trouble. You

have not said much about him. Has he had any trouble in the past?

Does he have learning issues? What have his experiences been thus

far in school? If he has done well up to this point, I don't think

you would have too much to worry about that would be different from

what other parents of kids that age worry about. But if he has some

other issues to deal with, then they have to be addressed and looked

after.

You can email me privately if you would like. My email address is

magicrss @hotmail.com. (Leave out the space.) I'm also a special

ed teacher and I have taught up to grade 8. With more info. about

your son, we can all better help you.

Jodi Z.

Hi!

Just wanted to say welcome! Sorry, no advice though on

mainstreaming...

, mom to 4.5, Emerence (SGA) 18.1 lb and 29 "

> Hello this is Jing from the Philippines. My son, Jojo 13y/o 57 " and

is diagnosed RSS. I am a member of the Magic Foundation and I was

lucky enough to get an advice from Cara through Magic's egroup for me

to be part of your support group as my query would be answered more

in this group since we have the same case.

regular school. Right now, my son is in grade 5 mainstreaming. We are

going to attend the wedding of my niece in Chicago on April and since

we are there already we are thinking of attending the convention for

next year. But then he will be missing a lot in school if we stay on

till July since school here starts around first week of June. My

sister who lives in Chicago suggested that I let him study here for a

year but since he's in mainstreaming I don't know if that would be

advisable. I would just like to know if any of you out there have a

child going to a regular school with mainstreaming and if so if you

could please let me know their system of teaching and how their peers

treat them. I would really appreciate advice and suggestion from

anybody out there.

Hi Manjo,

Remember my plans of wanting Jojo to try and study there at least for a year?

Well, if you have time maybe you can look into the process in your school

district there. The requirements since he'll be coming from here. Jojo is 13y/o

but is in 5th grade right now and is in mainstreaming. He did not repeat any

level, it's just that he started late. I need to know kasi what papers he has to

bring when he studies there so I can request for it now.

Thanks and keep in touch,

Jing

Hi

I live in Quezon City where all the hassle and bustle is! Anyway, my foster

brother (I was an exchange student there during my high school year) visited me

one time and introduced me to his American friend who used to work here also as

a missionary. They are based in Baguio.

If you ever decide to move here or even just come over for a visit please let me

know. Hopefully, we get to see each other. By the way, what state are you from?

Keep in touch!

Jing(Mom to Jojo, 13y/o)
