My non-RSS son just turned 4 a few weeks ago, and he is also small. In fact,

some RSS

kids on this list his age are bigger than him! He is 30lbs. and 38 " . He

doesn't eat well at

all (very picky eater & eats limited quantities) - something I wasn't prepared

for after

having a kid with a g-tube! Can you believe I can go into Mc's, order a

happy meal

for both kids to split (almost 11 years old & 4 years old) and they can't even

finish half of

that together? I always think restaurants think I am cheap - lol! Or

situations sound very

similar. I also have 3 kids ( & used to be skinny - lol) and have a skinny

husband the same

size as your husband! My son also has vocal chord nodules that they think was

due to

silent reflux, and I am finally taking him to a GI doctor to see about this next

week. The

ENT diagnosed the vocal nodules. I don't really have any ideas for you, but I

can definitely

sypathize with you!

Kim,

Can you tell me more about this silent reflux causing the nodules?

He says his belly hurts a lot... I wonder if there could be a

connection. His ENT said it was caused by over use of voice but this

doc wasnt' really someone I liked, He seemed conceited and wouldn't

talk much to me so I don't know much besides what the pamphlet says.

WE just went in monday and they told him they'd take a tube and put

it in his nose and down his throat to look. They gave him some

nosespray to numb a little and took this huge black tube out, told

him it would go in his nose, and got ready to brace him down! He was

so scared. I told them I'd hold him and I put him in my lap and held

and talked to him but they were kind of gruff. I know with kids you

need to get to the point, but they did not do it well. It was a

childrens hospital! Then I was told it was nodules and they gave me

a pamphlet and said it was overuse of voice. They never asked about

anything else. (Skye has a low, chronically hoarse voice)

I too only buy one happy meal for both my boys. I have a two year

old 27 lbs loves to eat and he eats most and Skye only eats 1/2 or

maybe if he's hungry, one chicken nugget and a few fries. I refuse

to buy 2 meals anywhere because it will not be eaten!

It's nice to know of other small kids coming from tall Dads! I don't

hear about it much except for mine!

What you have just described is a very stereotypical child with

growth hormone deficiency. Yes, indeed, he could also have

constitutional growth delay, but that can be resolved simply with a

bone age x-ray. From what I recall, CGD kids have delayed bone ages

(meaning they will grow a whole big amount later in life --

remember, RSS/SGA parents, this does NOT work for our kids). But

GHD kids are usually born at normal weight and height, and then

sometime after 6 months of age, the height starts falling off, and

weight too, but often the weight is still pretty proportionate for

the height (if you charted it weight for height). So it's not like

they have lack of appetite, weight problems that SGA kids. They

eat, just aren't growing.

You need a good pediatric endocrinologist. See what he or she says,

but guessing start with a bone age xray to determine delay or not.

If no delay (and even if there was a delay, he is awfully short for

a 6yr old based on your husband and your height) he probably will

recommend getting a STIM test.

Make sure to check into MAGIC's GHD division, and their MAGIC yahoo

listserve. Those families can give you TONS of proper information.

also has a hoarse, raspy voice, and it is the reason I took him to the

ENT. The first

thing they asked me was whether or not he had reflux. I told them he had silent

reflux

when he was a baby and was on meds for this, but hadn't been on them for a long

time,

and I assumed we were done with the reflux. The reason I knew he had silent

reflux when

he was a baby is that I could hear the food coming up by him gulping, screaming,

and

looking very uncomfortable (arching back, grimacing, etc.) He had an upper GI

when he

was a baby & it confirmed the reflux. He never had any other type of testing &

never saw a

GI doctor. The ENT did the same scope on on 2 separate occasions &

diagnosed

him with vocal nodules. He told me he was pretty sure that they were from the

reflux and

there was a good chance he still had it. For whatever reason (maybe my

hardheadedness),

I didn't think he could possibly still have it as age 2, so I never pursued

anything else with

it. The ENT also said he overused his voice, so this didn't help matters. He

said that if he

was older, he would have recommended voice therapy, but he didn't feel this

would be

effective for him unless he was older (maybe school age). doesn't eat

well and

occasionally says his tummy hurts, so now I am at the point of considering the

reflux

diagnosis, especially because he now has a baby sister with horrible reflux (the

worst of all

3 of my kids who have had it). So, he has an appointment in a week and a half

with a GI

doctor. I have been talking about him though with the doctor while taking my

daughter

there, and his associate thinks he is a good candidate for a pH probe test, so

we may end

up going this route. An upper GI will many times not catch the reflux even if a

child has it.

It just so happens that all of my kids had significant enough reflux that it

showed in the

upper GI with flying colors. Both of my other kids have had a pH probe which

also showed

significant reflux. This is a tube inserted into the nose down to the espohagus

and is

worn for 24 hours. It is attached to a monitor in which records acidity in the

espophagus.

You also have to keep a diary of episodes to submit. I'll let you know more

after our

appointment!

The STIM test is the stimulation blood test over several hours that

determines if a child is growth hormone deficient or not. You

really should connect with the GHD group at MAGIC because they will

be much better equipped with education -- they are awesome. You can

call tollfree 1-800-3MAGIC3 or join the listserve and post the

question. Good luck!
