Guest guest
Hi Amy, 50% is a good average for all the studies done. In Japan the rates are much higher and in Europe they're also higher than 50%, probably because both countries have more experience with the use of ATDs. According to Harvard's P. Larsen, most everyone can achieve remission on ATDs. Often, though, people are taken off them without doing the correct tests to see if remission has occurred. I wouldn't use the word cured though since it's actually remission that's attained. Take care, Elaine
Guest guest
Cured would be an inappropriate word to use. Remission is more accurate. GD can subside, and then be triggered or return at a later time. I think that the remission rate with ATDs is more like 30%. I think this percentage would increase significantly if patients were managed well on the medications, so that number isn't so bad! Guest guest
Dear Elaine, This idea of cure or remission has always intrigued me. I am in remission, yet I still have a noticibley enlarged thyroid gland which swells instantly under stress! I don't feel I am in the same thyroid state that I was before I developed Graves' and that is what I would call a cure. Do you think some people manage to achieve this? That some people who have had Graves' would be indesipherable at a cell level in the thyroid gland, from those who have not had Graves'? Is there any reserach on this? DAWN ROSE In remissioin for about 18 months now, off all meds and not using any herbs at this point. Need to loose the weight I gained on ATDs - currently going to the gym every day and will report in on how it is going. From: daisyelaine@...
