Cara,

I think all of us wonder if we " did " something to cause this. I

can't speak about the pamphlet, because I don't have one here. But

Dr. Harbison says over and over again that something in utero was

haywire. Poor prenatal care probably affected our son, since he was

adopted from a birth mom that didn't have any care. He also had a

bad cord and it was wrapped around his neck. SGA can also be due to

an unhealthy placenta. KEEP in mind, the placenta comes from the

baby, not mom, so most times it is just a wiring problem or a gene

problem with these kids that starts the whole thing very early, in

utero.

So, NO, it doesn't mean you as a parent did anything to cause it or

bring it on. Most times it is out of our control. What is in our

control are the hypo G issues (which we missed) as infants and

addressing the other health concerns our kids all have.

DO NOT waste your effort on what has happened in the past.

Concentrate on finding the best road now, and getting your son the

care and help he needs.

And I think I can speak for the Magic brochure, that no one at MAGIC

feels like we caused or were intentionally causing our kids to be

SGA or RSS! They are supporting us!

No SGA is just defined based on birth weight and height and there are

a whole host of reasons why a baby can be SGA. It can be genetical,

hypertension and placenta problem of the mother, but smoking and

drug abuse cause small babies, and I would think thats why one cannot

write a general statement that parent had nothing to do with a baby

being SGA.

Cara - Jen Salem here. No, Cara - it just means that when I was

writing both pamphlets, there wasn't enough room in the SGA one to

include everything..... HA!

Also, the fact is that for children who are born SGA, MANY reasons

are included in that category for causality of SGA, and yes, many of

them could be parentally induced -- parental drinking, drug use, and

more.

HOWEVER, of those children who are born SGA and do not achieve catch-

up growth by age 2 (only 7% of all children born SGA don't catchup

by age 2) -- these parental factors do not apply.

Don't worry! Next time I rewrite/update the pamphlets, I will try

and remember to add that back into the SGA one. :)
