I am considering acupuncture for Graves'. I called one guy a couple of

months ago, and he said that he didn't know if I could " take " the

treatments because they would be painful. That sounded wrong to me, as I

thought acupuncture wasn't supposed to hurt. Do you know what he's talking

about?

I am interested to hear how you do!

I definitely would not go to that acupuncturist! As someone who gets treated

frequently, I can tell you that there is a zingy electrical sort of

sensation when the needle is inserted into the right spot, but it's not

exactly pain. The needles themselves are barely bigger than a hair, and you

don't feel them except if they are inserted somewhere with very tough skin,

like the sole of the foot (rarely used spot). There are acupuncturists who

seem to delight in causing pain, however, and I've seen one or two of

them--once only--in the past. Some were teachers at my husband's acupuncture

college who I saw before he was licensed.

One of the major things you can do is find out what kind of needles they

use. The Japanese needles are the best, my husband uses Seirin brand. The

Chinese needles (I'm talking disposables btw) if you put them under a

microscope look like little fish-hooks at the end, because the mfg. process

is not as refined. They are more painful to insert. They are also cheaper by

far to buy.

Good luck,

Terry
