Lillie at 17 should have the " white fillings " since technology makes them

available now. There are some cases where a white filling does not work,

and silver fillings are the only solution unless a crown or " cap " is put on

the tooth. Then your looking at $750.00 compared to maybe $158.00. I would

not be worried about " mercury poison " from dental fillings, although you

will hear from other's a big scare about it. If they prescribed a fluoride

rinse, then Lillie needs to pay more attention to her oral hygiene and

eating habits. She must brush and floss daily. Before bed time is

extremely important, that she brush and floss then. The jury is still out

on fluoride in city water, but the fluoride rinse will be helpful in

stopping any " watches " that she may still have (almost a cavity, but not yet

in the dentin, only in the enamel of the tooth) The fluoride rinse will be

used after brushing and flossing at night, rinsed then spit out, not

swallowed. Pop for Grave's disease and dental decay is a big no. The

slogan " sip all day, get decay " is for real. Those that just chug down the

pop, won't experience the decay problem, but if you just keep a can on your

desk and keep sipping all day, you are continually bathing your teeth in

it's acid, does not matter if it's sugar free or not.

Now on novocaine, ok to use, ask for carbocaine without epinephrine if she

is still having heart palpation's. As for the wisdom teeth. Ask if it is

really important that she get them out this year, or will a year or two down

the road be ok when she is more closer to being well from Grave's. If I

remember, from previous postings, she has not had Grave's that long.

Anesthesia is never a fun thing when your body is healthy, and why put her

through that if the procedure can wait. Reason's it can wait are, 1, the

wisdom teeth are present on the x-ray, but are impacted and can't erupt, but

not doing any damage just sitting there for several years yet. 2, some doc's

just think all wisdom teeth need to come out, well some people have room for

them.

They need to come out now if they are partially erupted and the gum tissue

around them gets infected and swells, called periocoronitis. Or if they are

impacted in such a way that they are pressing on the tooth in front of it

and causing the other tooth to erode or dissolve (there's another word, but

I can't think of it).

I hope this information is helpful.

Dear Jen,

Wow, what a terrific, thorough answer. This group is an amazing place.

What do the letters CDA RDA stand for?

I will certainly ask the dentist if her wisdom teeth can wait. They

are partially emerged already. If it does turn out to be truly

necessary, do you have advise about anesthesia for that?

I will ask about carbocaine without epinephrine for the filling

procedures. She's not having heart palpations currently. In fact she

is having some hypO symptoms, and her dosgae was recently lowered. She

was diagnosed in April and started treatment in early May. We think

she had Graves for a few years previously.

If there are no palpitations, then should I assume that novocaine is

OK? Sorry if I seem to be repeating myself -- just want to be sure I

understand.

It's been hard to get her to take proper care of her teeth. We're

hoping that the experience of getting 4 cavities filled will cause her

to change her ways!

I'm glad to hear you think the fluoride rinse will be OK. We live in a

rural area, and use our own well water.

Thank you!!!!

Dear Pam and Jen,

Thank you for your replies! I spoke with the dentist yesterday after

reading Jen's advise. He agreed that it would be fine to wait for a

while for the wisdom teeth to come out, though he said it will need to

be done eventually, or they will crowd her front teeth as they come

in. Lillie is VERY happy to have a reprieve. I feel much better, too,

and very glad I wrote to the group about this.

Pam, sometimes your descriptions of Amy's experience are just like

ours. I feel more sure than ever now, that there are particular ways

that a teen reacts to this Gravesian metabolic interference (for lack

of a better way to put it!).

Slowing down is good advise. We're learning the hard way of the

necessity of doing this. Also it's hard with a 17 yr old -- to be at a

stage where you want to start letting out the rope, so to peak, and

give more freedom, to be in a situation where we must hold on tighter

for a little longer.

Thanks again!

Hi Fay,

Lillie has not had orthodonture, and is blessed with straight teeth

(UNlike every other member of her family!). The dentist is concerned

about crowding, and it would sure be a shame if those nice straight

teeth went crooked, so we will watch carefully and wait only as long

as is prudent. We do want her to be more stable before assaulting her

with oral surgery.

Her levels seem to be fluctuating, she is having some hypO symptoms

now, and we have an endo appt on Wednesday. She's been complaining of

a lack of appetite, trouble sleeping, a bit down in the dumps, etc.

Interestingly, last night we were out late, and when we got home she

was hungry for the first time in a week and had a big midnight snack.

Turned out she'd missed her evening dose of Methimazole. So I'm

thinking she might need a further reduction in her dosage?

Thanks for listening, I know there are people out there with way more

serious issues, and my heart goes out to you.

Thanks, Jen, I'll take your advise as I'm very apprehensive about the

extractions at this time for Lillie.

Lillie's own instinct is that her wisdom teeth are OK as they are,

which is probably both valid and also wishful thinking. In any case

we're willing to wait it out.

Thanks for your attention to this matter -- it is truly appreciated.
