Guest guest
Jean, I was really happy to read your e-mail as I have always tried to give our son healthy foods. We recently decided to take him to a nutritionist/chiropractor. When we told Dr. H. about it, she was not thrilled, but I do believe in alternative care along with her care of course. We are continuing most of what he suggested, I just wanted to mention that Dr. H. was really against cod liver oil as she said that it is very dangerous if a child aspirates it. She was also concerned about toxins even though we were giving him a pharmaceutical grade and I believe she is also concerned about overdosing on oil based vitamins. Anyway, I hope all this makes sense. I just thought I would send it since you mentioned Cod Liver Oil. Thanks for your e-mail. Guest guest
, I think it's great that you go to a nutritionist/chiropractor. It's been my experience that when it comes to diet generally they are more informed than most endos. Just as when taking the synthetic drugs that most endos prescribe, taking too much of something natural like code liver oil, can be of concern. I believe that many of Dr H's negative comments come from a lack of knowledge about natural supplements since most conventionally trained doctors have only a few hours of nutritional training in med school and little experience with natural treatments. As long as you get a high quality brand code liver oil (Calson's, Nortic Natural to mention a couple), or pharmaceutical grade which you are getting, there should be no risk of toxins. Dr H's concern about overdosing on an oil based vitamin is valid but can be addressed with a periodic blood test called 25(OH)D (also called 25- hydroxyvitamin D). Make sure this is the test you get since labs often give the test for 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, the active hormone. This test is the wrong test as it offers no meaningful data regarding D status. Here are the 25(OH)D levels that my doctor shoots for: optimal values are 40-50 ng/ml, acceptable values are 35-55 ng/ml and levels above 55 ng/ml will be toxic for some individuals. An additional caveat, vitamin D supplementation such as code liver oil, should never be taken unless calcium intake is sufficient or supplemented at the same time. Two excellent sources of calcium in the human diet are dairy products (raw dairy products from pasture feed animals) and bone broths.
