Guest guest
Charlene, My son Matt is on Periactin and we increased it after seeing Dr. H at convention. Matt is VERY sensitive to this medicine. We have to wean him up, extremely slowly, slower than what other people do. I add 2 cc to his dose for several days and then do it again. It takes me FOREVER to get him back up if we have to take him off of it (for example for some allergy testing) but it is the only way he can handle it. I would keep the full even dose and give him 1/4 of the morning dose for a week, then add the next quarter of the morning, etc. It is hard to know if it really increases his appetite. But I think for most of us we see definate weight gain. I notice it more in Matt that I don't have to argue (as hard) to get him to eat. And for us, that is a small, valuable step. Hang in there. Good luck Beth MOm to Matt, SGA > > Our son just started periactin since the convention. Dr. > Harbison wants him to put on more weight. Guest guest
I was wandering if anyone could tell me what the best time to give periactin is? I was giving it to before bed, but the pharmacist said an hour before dinner is best. Charlene 4 1/2 year old twins RSS-32 lbs. GH and periactin. Guest guest
Hi Charlene, I would check with your doctor. Our doctor always advised us to give it 1/2 to 1 hour before each meal. Recntly, we were advised to cut back ad give periactin just before dinner and not at any other meals. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Dear Charlene, I think the dosing before bedtime is to help avoid some of the possible side effects of the drug, the drowsiness and grumpiness. And, I do think you might get some improvement in appetite that way, but not nearly so much as the dosing half an hour before meals. Guest guest
Charlene, I think others have answered this. But I wanted to remind everyone that Periactin is a SHORT-ACTING medication -- seems to be out of the system in about 6 hours. Hence, if you give him the med before bedtime, you might as well not give it to him at all. Because it would make him hungry while he is asleep, and be out of his system by morning. Does that make sense? This is also why it is not recommended that you give the two doses at breakfast and lunch, or lunch and dinner, because there aren't 6 hours in between those two meals -- you would in effect be DOUBLING up the med dosage for part of that time, and that isn't safe. So, breakfast and dinner are appropriate and safe and optimal. Some families find that the food searching begins 30 minutes after, others 60 minutes. It is trial and error for each child. Guest guest
Hi Jane, As far as I know, only the generic version is still available, and that is what everyone uses. I don't remember the name, and since is 100% g-tube fed, we don't use it yet. If I remember correctly from earlier posts, isn't your the one with the severe reflux?? If so, you would need to watch her carefully, as Periactin can increase that problem. Someone correct me if I'm wrong! LOL Hope this is helpful! Guest guest
Hi Jane, The original developer of Periactin stopped making it years ago, so you can only get the generic form. You might want to make sure that your pharmacy is getting you the liquid and not the tablets. Also, you might want to consider starting slowly with this. When we started our son on it we were told to use the following ramp up schedule. Others have done it differently. It depends on how well your daughter can tolerate it. Week 1. Give 1/4 of the recommended dose divided between 3 meals a day about 1/2 to 1 hour before the meal. Week 2. Give 1/2 of the recommended dose divided between 3 meals a day about 1/2 to 1 hour before the meal. Week 3. Give 3/4 of the recommended dose divided between 3 meals a day about 1/2 to 1 hour before the meal. Week 4. Give the full recommended dose divided between 3 meals a day about 1/2 to 1 hour before the meal. Of course, check with your doctor to see if she/he has any preference on how to begin this medication. Hope this helps Ken M > > I will be starting my daughter on periactin soon - our pharmacy has to order it in - but said they could only find the generic brand - does anyoone know if this is o.k.? Guest guest
Hi Jane, 3ml 3x per day seems high. That is 9 ml per day. My son's bigest dose was 12 ml per day which at the time was the max he could take. He was 4 and almost 30 pounds then. I would suggest a smaller amount and see how your daughter responds. Some kids do not respond well to this antihistamine. Please check with your doctor if you have any questions. I hope this helps Ken M > > Thanks all for the info. My Dr. rec. starting with 1.25ml 3X/day and working up to 3ml 3X/day - does this sound like an o.k. dose or should I still break it down to a smaller amount? Thanks for the advice - Jane, mom to
