Guest guest
I have been reading about the kids who have had fundos and are now having reflux problems again - and Dr. H. recommending that the fundos be redone. Max, too, has had a fundo, done last August, and he seems to have increased reflux again, too. I wonder why this is happening? This may be something to bring up with Dr. Spigland at the convention. After all, she is the one who did fundos for many of our kids in NYC. BTW, there is NO WAY I would put Max through that again. The emotional setback and the lack of pain control were just too hard on all of us. Jodi Z.
Guest guest
Hi all - I look forward to seeing everyone at the convention this week. Jodi Z. I was wondering how many other Fundo kids out there were retreating back to their old reflux ways? I honestly thought by having the Fundo Henry would not need to take any reflux meds - so when his reflux came back about a year after surgery I was shocked. I did not remember Dr. H or Dr. Spigland mentioning that possibility prior to surgery. See you in Chicago, Hurlin Henry - RSS, fundo/g-tube/pyloro, periactin, miralax, prilosec, zantac, peptamen jr 31 lbs, 37 1/2 in, 4yrs old - nonRSS, 43lbs, 48in. 8yrs old
Guest guest
Dear : Please excuse me for asking but I am new to all of this. What is Fundo? I hope you were able to get some answers while at convention. I hope Henry is doing better. > Hi all - I look forward to seeing everyone at the convention this week. Jodi > Z. Guest guest
Hi !! We're ending up with as many s as we have Jodies on the list serve! LOL Fundo is short for fundoplication. This is a surgery, usually done along with the placement of a g-tube. The most common type of fundo used is called a Nissen. This is a 360 degree wrap around the bottom of the esophagus at the top of the stomach. It helps to control reflux. Another surgical procedure done along with the placement of a g-tube is called a pyloroplasty, or the combination of an antro/pyloroplasty. This procedure cuts through the muscle at the bottom of the stomach called the pylorus sphincter, to help increase the stomach emptying time. Many of our kids have problems with delayed gastric (stomach) emptying. I didn't feel that the question of " why " so many of our kids, that have had fundos previously, and are having severe to moderate problems with reflux, was ever adequately answered. It was explained that there are numerous situations that can " break down " or " blow " the fundo, but no one ever said if there was a way to prevent this. One thing that is supposed to help is to vent the child regularly, and this is why Dr H pushes the 4-6 hour venting schedule religiously. I hope that this explanation helps! Feel free to ask for clarification of anything I wrote. Pat (g-ma to , RSS, 31 months, G-Tube)
