I can't wait to see the answer to this one Marlene. I've taken a flu shot for

the last 3 yrs of the 4 I've worked for this company. They take us to another

business every year and we get our flu shots for free at our bosses friends

company. I've also not had the flu since I first started taking this shot which

has been a real blessing. Normally if there's something nasty going

around....I'd be one of the first to get it the minute it came my way.

FLU VACCINATION

Hi,

Silly question. Is it recommended for Graves patients to get a flu

shot? I have gotten one the past several years, but now I wonder???

Thanks

We've answered this a bunch of times in the archive, so I just dug up one of

Elaine's answers from November last year:

Hi,

Vaccines stimulate your immune system so in active GD, your symptoms can

worsen. Most docs recommend not having it if you have an autoimmune disease

unless there are extenuating circumstances, particularly in the elderly.

Take

care, Elaine

Another thing that comes up fairly often is can we give blood - and no we

shouldn't do that either.

Hey Pam B,

Thanks for digging this up. Darn! But what if we are in remission...?

We also get folks on a regular basis that their flu shot was the final

trigger that set off Graves'.

Skimming through archives of this group and others, every year during flu

shot season will show the same thing.

Sandy,

It could have been your over active immune system and body protecting you.

And before, as many are a bit hypo before hyper comes, the hypo makes us

more susceptible to colds and such.

We will never know for sure unless their were complete thyroid labs done

every year before we each did get rally sick.

As far as remission is concerned.

Why... after Graves' and all of the LIFE consequences, would anyone with the

genetics to have a thyroid problem even consider a flu shot ?

The flu only last a week or less.

Wish I had more time for the other posts right now, but I am outa here. Back

next week !

Nick... stick around :-)

OK, Pam, you convinced me. I just really liked not having the flu for the

past few years -- it worked every time. And I always got the flu every year

I did not have the shot.
