Dr. Holmes told us to give our 35 lb. son 30 mg. of zinc at night and to make sure he got no copper at all and to make sure there was none in his multivitamin. Zinc should be taken alone away from calcium and that's why it's given at night to make sure it's absorbed by the body. Guest guest
The main reason I give zinc at bedtime is *because it says so on the bottle* :-) But <If you wish to take a zinc supplement, rather take it at night on a empty stomach, as zinc can interfere with the absorption of other minerals such as copper and iron. In a multi- vitamin situation, make sure that the zinc and iron is nearly in the same amounts.> That an more I got off the net when I was looking what to supplement with. And there is more: Zinc is associated with poor appetite, taste abnormalities and menthal lethargy as well as delayed healing of wounds, hair loss, recurrent infections, dermatitis and skin disorders, and poor growth in childhood; helps with diahrrea, weight loss and sleeping patterns; also, iron taken in solutions can inhibit the absorption of zinc(but not iron fortified foods). *But too much zinc can cause dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diahrrea, drowsiness and allucinations.*(that's why at night) Children 1 to 10, should take no more than 10 mg per day (1/2 tsp), and 3 mg for infants. It is also good advice to supplement with 1 mg of copper per ea. 10 mg of zinc as well as 50 to 200 of selenium. It may take a month or so to see the first results, because that's how long it takes to modify the body " habits " . Hope this answer all the zinc questions. It did to me when I decided to try it out. :-) Good luck supplementing! Cristina ('s mom-WA)
Guest guest
*Sorry* I didn't mean it that way! I don't give my son copper, I was just reporting what I got off the net to support the zinc intake. And always you want to test if you are not sure that he really needs it. had really bad stools and was having sleeping problems after we moved here (last 7-8 months); I didn't want to give him meds, so I decided to try zinc. Giving him the zinc had helped a lot in that way. This is just my experience, it doesn't mean it's " the right and only way " . And I did say it has to be taken away from other vitamins and mineral to assure the right absorption.
