Hi ,

Chinese acupuncture (that's what my husband does, also known as TCM or

Traditional Chinese Medicine) is the " original " . It works with the

meridians, or channels of energy in the body, to treat various diseases and

pain. Japanese is very similar, but like everything that is transposed from

one country to another, they have made it their own in some ways. There are

of course many different disciplines or theories within each nationality's

acupuncture, and variations are common. it's an ancient art. In general,

from what I understand the Japanese use more needles, very shallow placement

and very short time in place--but I could be wrong, I've never had Japanese

style acupuncture. I only know that they seem make superior needles, not

surprising considering the perfectionism inherent in the culture--look at

the arts practiced in Japan, from sword making to tea ceremony, to

understand.

I asked my husband if there is a book a lay person could read to understand

acupuncture, and he said the best he knows is The Web That Has NO Weaver,

Understanding Chinese Medicine, by Ted Kaptchuk, OMD.
