Guest guest
Dear , I can't write much now as I am off to bed but I remember feeling like you do and it is wrotten. I just wanted to tell you that it is possible to feel better than you do - that lots of us have made that journey. When I was very hyper, all the symptoms which you describe played out in me. The not getting out of bed symptoms, extreme tiredness is classically more indicative of hypo (underactive thyroid) - but if you have been very hyper, I guess you just get to a point of exhaustion, even if you are agitated and unable to sit still. I know I used to wake up in the morning and feel like I had been swimming and running all through the night - I think my heart rate was very rapid in my sleep (or so the heart monitor they put on me in the end showed)... so in a way my body had not been resting as it should have done so it was no surprise that I was tired all the time. On the other hand, some unlucky souls do have the experience of swinging between hyper and hypo - antibodies for both types of illness - Graves' and Hashimotos can be present at the same time... or we can transition from one state to the other. It doesn't sound like they are giving you much information about yourself at the doctors, though it is great that they are monitoring you every two weeks... where abouts are you on the globe? In the States? I think most people here are - though I am in Australia myself. There is a symptom list in the archives here on this board... type symtom list in the search facility and it should come up with all the symptoms that people have shared for hyper and hypo. The trouble with thyroid problems (!) is that there are so many symptoms. Thryoid hormones go everywhere in your body, they help regulate every single organ that you have so an over or under active thryoid can have an effect almost anywhere. My advice is to take notice of how you feel because you are the only one who can know how it feels to be in your body. I hope this is of some help... feel I am being a bit woolley.... but when I was ill I was very relieved to hear from people who were feeling better and in remission (as I am now) because it made me feel that it was possible to get better, at a time when from - from inside my unreliable body, it was hard to imagine. Guest guest
Hi , I have a few questions for you (sorry if they've been asked and answered; I have difficulty keeping up with everyone). > hi guys, graves disease still confuses me, my doctor > isnt much help, he just prescribes me pills GD is very confusing, but I've learned an awful lot. What I don't understand I don't need to know yet, but I know just who to ask if I ever do need to. If I can do it anyone can. An important part of the learning process is clear identification - knowing names of tests, medications, doses, etc. No one says you ever have to know it all by heart. Take advantage of the school supply sales now and get a binder and highlighter. Keep copies of all your records - bloodwork, letters from your doctor - and all the information will be at your fingertips. What pills are you taking, how many milligrams a day, and how many times a day? It's good that your dr. wants to check you so frequently but too many people who've passed through here aren't even started off properly. So pardon me for being nosy but we want to help you make sure all your bases are covered. and says > ill see u in 2 weeks, i just want to write a list of > things in going through and i was wondering if someone > could tell me what is related to graves disease and > whats no...so here goes > -severe cramps in my legs > -blurryed vision > -sore and itchy eyes, feels like they are going to pop > out of my head > -dizzyness > -tingling sensation all over > -uncontrolable shaking > -severe pain in the neck,to the point where i cant > open my mouth > -depression > -tiredness, cant even get out of bed some days > -lack of energy > -panic attacks > -heart rate of 110 most days, even when im in bed all > day, > -sore joints > -low labido, actually non-existing libido > -sore jaws, grinding teeth > -dazy feeling all the time > -twitching in my face I've experienced quite a few myself and have heard of others who've had the rest (besides the twitching I think, which sounds like it might be related). You did a good job of identifying your symptoms; I think Dawn already mentioned the symptoms list and related info. So much of this will improve over the next few weeks as the medication starts to work. Here are a few things to consider: -Have you read the letter to the newly diagnosed and the letter to family members? I think you'll find them on the homepage. You'll feel so much better knowing that others have experienced this too. -If you're due for a visit to the ophthamologist (an MD, not an optometrist) please make an appointment and mention your GD. S/he will do some baseline tests and measurements that you may want to share with us. You may have TED (thyroid eye disease) or be headed in that direction. Anti-thyroid drugs may well help reverse it because of the effect of ATD on the antibodies causing Graves. The supplement Omega 3 will also help soothe your symptoms. Since you already have some eye involvement (again, hopefully minor and easily reversible) DO NOT consider having RAI! - Do you take calcium? If you don't you probably should start. It'll help strengthen your bones. Some people find that they suffer bone density loss with Graves. If you don't feel you have your muscle strength back after a few months on ATDs and supplemental calcium try to get a bone density test. If you're young and/or your dr. balks, bone density screenings are often available for free at health fairs. Doctors do take results from screening tests into consideration and a low enough test may lead your dr. to recommend a full bone density test. Your local library may carry some local free magazines on the subject of women's health - I know they do in my area - and often they list health fairs, as your local paper might. Things do improve.
