Guest guest
Hi Luci - Yes, it does seem that it's not uncommon to have hyper and hypo symptoms at the same time. Elaine has explained it before how this can happen, and hopefully I'm paraphrasing it correctly or at least close. We know that Graves' is caused by antibodies attacking the thyroid and that there are different kinds of antibodies. Some of the antibodies attack the thyroid tissue itself and kill it (I believe this pertains to the thyroid peroxidase antibodies - the TPO - in particular). As the thyroid tissue dies, the thyroid hormones that were stored in the tissue is released, causing " bursts " of hyper. Similar thing also happens when people have RAI. The RAI destroys the thyroid tissue and the stored thyroid hormone is released. That's part of why people usually feel worse before they feel better with RAI. So nope, you're not the only one that feels hyper/hypo at the same time. Also, your thyroid levels are at their highest right before your mestrual cycle begins, so that can cause one to feel a bit more hyper even if you're not. I know this happens to me no matter what level I seem to be at. Also, some of the hypo/hyper symptoms overlap and everyone is different and has their own individual hyper/hypo symptoms. Hope that makes you feel a bit better anyway! P.S. Did anyone see the Scientific American show on their local PBS channel? It was about stress, the fight-or-flight syndrome, and how it can make people ill, weaken immune systems, etc. It was pretty interesting (although showed too much blood drawing for me - icky!) Anyway, the basic summary of the show was this: Can stress make you sick? Yes, definitely. Are some people more prone to stress than others? Yes. Can learning to deal with stress through meditation, yoga, whatever, improve your health? Yes it does. Stuff we already know, but interesting to see it backed up by some scientific evidence.
