One day at a time

Thank you all for your wonderful words of support. My family is

getting through things one day, sometimes one hour, at a time.

is handling things pretty well, though. He can

compartmentalize and carry on where I tend to just let things take

over and encompass everything.

The funeral for my mother-in-law was this morning. We sat shivah at

my father-in-law's apartment this afternoon, but we cannot do it

over the next 24 hours because of Shabbat. We will resume tomorrow

at 7pm at our house. Then the next few days will be back at his

apartment.

I am worried sick about my mother and her husband. The hurricane is

heading right for them (but there is NO safe place in Florida now)

and I cannot call them. They have a cell phone, but they don't want

me to use the number because they want to save the batterie. It is

hard enough to worry about them in the hurricane, and add the loss

of 's mother and it gets doubly bad.

Max, on the other hand, has been extraordinarily strong. He got

through the funeral with crying appropriately, is eating well, and

even joking with family and friends. He is reacting as I would

expect ANY teenager to react. I even " forgot " about him this

afternoon and went to take a nap. It was nice not to have to hover

over him and worry that he would make himself sick enough to wind up

in the hospital. I have done a lot of talking to him, though, to

tell him that he is strong and he can control his actions. And he

has risen to the challenges.

Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of the

messages, both here and in my private email. They mean so much.

Jodi Z.
