Hi nne,

What a sweet little girl! I love those big eyes too!

We had the same problem with our daughter as she was still in an

infant seat when she was 3. I finally had to get a note from both

the Dr. and the Public Health Nurse giving permission for Olivia to

be forward facing in a toddler carseat since her muscle tone allows

her to ride safely this way. In Canada (our province any way) we

have Carseat Checkstops where they stop all cars and check the

installation of the car seat and weigh all of the children... big

fines if they're not safe so that's why we have to keep the notes in

the car at all times. I'm very glad that we have that option since

Olivia is now almost 5 and still not 20 lbs yet. It may be

worthwhile to ask your Dr and see what the state will allow.

Hope this might help some!

Hi nne,

All of us have had this problem. I have boy/girl twins where my son

has RSS. My daughter was front facing at 10 months and wasn't

front facing until 2 1/2. We actually turned him before he reached

20 pounds because his legs were getting a little long for the seat.

Also, the 20 pound rule is mainly for head control so they don't get

whipped around so easily in an accident. By that age, had

good head control even though he was still under 2o pounds.

If you search the archives, you should be able to find old posts on

this.

Yep we are in the same boat. Keigan is 16 moths and 16 Lbs. It feels like

forever until we can turn him. He is in an infant seat still but we are looking

at purchasing a different seat. Here in Nebraska we can not forward face until

22 Lbs. I agree, it feels like he will be 3 before we can turn him. (he may

be!) In my opinion though, he really doesn't know any different and rear facing

is safer at his weight. So we are just sticking with and waiting it out.

question about turning my daughter around in big

carseat

First of all I would like to thank you all for welcoming me to the

group! I feel blessed that I came across this group. It is so nice

to read about people with the same issues that I am dealing with. My

daughter is Mia and we live in Tampa, Florida.

I posted 2 photos of her on the photo page. Mia hasn't been

diagnosed yet but as I said in an earlier email, she has many

characteristics.

Mia was almost 18 pounds at her last check up. I finally purchased a

big carseat (her legs are finally starting to hang over in her infant

seat). I still have it facing backwards. I am anxious to turn her

around when she makes it to 20 pounds. I don't know how long that

will be. I feel like she will be 3 and still facing backwards! I

don't want to turn it around when it is unsafe. Does anyone else

have this problem?

Thanks for the referrals to MAGIC too! nne

Hi nne:

First welcome to the group. I was away for a few days and I am still

catching up.

As far that car seat goes the rule obviously is they must be both at

least 1 year of age and 20 pounds. The reason for that is due to

their neck and head control/strength. You should be fine due to Mia's

age and only 2lbs away but again check with your pediatrician on their

opinion. I know here in New Jersey if you call your local fire

department or police department they will install your car set for you

and check it and make sure it is in properly. When I first changed

around she was a year and a half and not quite 20 pounds but at

that age where she could hold something herself to eat I felt it was

more important that she faced forward so that I could see her better

with any food that she had. I also took the car seat to the local

fire department and they check the carseat over and installed it so it

was nice and tight and they actually put in the car seat to

measure her up to it.

Good luck and again call if you feel more comfortable call your ped.

We bought one of the infant/toddler seats that can be used forward and rear

facing and left it rear facing until we reached 20 lbs at almost 2. We felt

that was the safest route after she outgrew her infant carrier.

nne,

Mia is so adorable. How precious! :o)

We turned around pretty early. I had to get him a new carseat

that would be forward facing because he layed in a carbed for the

longest time. He was way too small for a carseat. When his legs

began hanging over the sides, I got him a forward facing seat.

has such severe reflux, we just got documented, that he spit

up so much. And, in the car, I wanted to be able to see when he was

getting ready to do this. It was for his safety and for my piece of

mind. But, he was strong enough at this point that he had good head

control.

In the end, it will be wahtever you feel the most comfortable doing.

I don't think two pounds is going to make a huge difference in her

head control or whatever, but it is where your comfort lies. :o)

Take care,
