Hi Carole,

Many antihistamines, like pseudoephedrine and chlorpheneramine, stimulate the

sympathetic nervous system, raising pulse and blood pressure. These can make

the effects of hyperthyroidism worse.

Some of the newer drugs like Claritin don't cross the blood-brain barrier and

don't have this effect.

If you have thyroid eye disease or any eye symptoms, antihistamines and nasal

decongestants should be avoided because they contribute to dryness, making

symptoms worse.

If your thyroid hormone levels are in good control and you have no eye

symptoms, you can use antihistamines, but it's still better to use the newer

products. If you look at the labels on most over-the-counter antihistamines

you'll

see the warning about not using them if you have thyroid disease. Take care,

Elaine

you can make sure I have this right should she have the following tested

Serum T4

Free T4

Sensitive TSH

Thank you so much for this

Take care

Hi Carole,

You don't need T3 and T4. They measure the free hormone and the binding proteins

so they can be low or high if the protein levels are high or low.

The FT4, FT3 and TSH are what you want. take care, Elaine

Hi Elaine,

Well the test results are back. When we saw the nurse she could only tell me

that it was a thyroid function tests Vic was having.

Doc rang on Wed to let me know the results waiting for her letter to arrive. She

is good she's a Endo Registrar and really helpful.

Apparently they don't test for FT3 here. She did explain it to me but I am

afraid I still don't understand it very well. I will get there eventually

though.

Vic is now in the normal range but on the lower side so they have reduced her

medication to 1 tablet again for 3 weeks and then to 1/2 tablet then she goes

for another blood test Then I will see the Doc a week after this.

They don't see many children with Graves here They see many adults but not

children so it is all very new to them as well. The Doctor admitted that she

thought we would be okay for 3 mths before the next blood test after our last

blood test but she is really pleased she changed it to 6 weeks because the

medication is working very well on her.

I am starting to learn what is Hypo and what Hyper is which is a starting point

because then I can explain it to Vic. Which is great because then she is

starting to under stand what is happening to her. That it is normal for her.

Bye for now

Carole

Hi Carole,

Glad you were able to have the tests done and get the meds reduced. It is

good to recognize the symptoms of both hyper and hypo. If you notice more hypo

symptoms you can always call and ask to have tests earlier than scheduled.

Sounds like good news. Best to you, Elaine
