Guest guest
Hi Ruthie, Your endo is running the correct tests. Your GP is ordering old-fashioned obsolete tests that calculate what free T4 might be. We used these tests before tests become available (a decade ago) to measure free T4 directly. The total T4 your endo ordered measures free hormone and hormone bound or linked to protein molecules. Linked to protein, thyroid hormone is inactive. The T3 Uptake does not measure thyroid hormone. It measures your levels of binding proteins. Using these two results we used to calculate an FT4 index or FT4 calculation that approximates what FT4 might be. Go to the AACE site (www.aace.com or .org) and print out the press release showing the new TSH recommended range from the January 03 press release. Your doctor might not be aware of this or he may not know that TSH shouldn't be used to monitor ATD therapy. take care, elaine
