Guest guest
OK. Jen Salem here. After one week at the convention and 2 weeks vacation after the convention, I arrive home to 300 emails in my personal/MAGIC accounts and just finished skimming through 700!!! emails in the listserve. Whew. I also had an incredible time meeting most of you at the convention. But when I was going through the attendee list, I still found about 10 families I never met (or at least I don't remember meeting). Guess that happens. Different news. Ya know, it definitely gets easier when the RSS kid gets older, but then new issues always pop up. Definitely going to focus on that topic at next year's convention -- the 8-12 year old RSS children!!! 1. despises any discussion about her weight. I can already see that preteen years will be hard. And with delayed gastric emptying, and hers is severe, she gets that huge pregnant stomach. She hates it, and I can see her rubbing her tummy. I am SOO afraid that at age 11 she is going to stop eating because she will be afraid of people seeing this " tummy " on her. Arghh! 2. She picked up some fever/upset tummy bug the week after the convention in Michigan, because she arrived in KY sick. Never threw up, so for the first time, what was I to do when she didn't eat. I called Jodi Zwain for help! I bought the ketosticks, but she was NOT spilling ketones. But she was just laying there after 2 days, not eating, wouldn't lift her head. Got some popsicles into her. Finally went to the ER, and called our CA pediatrician. BSL was not really low, 85 (her normal is 115), got an IV into her, and about 3 hours later, 10pm at night, she sits up and says " I'm hungry, can I have something to eat " and then ate a whole bag of Fritos..... She was actually very dehydrated and I think that also suppressed her appetite. She is still very thin a week later, but only spent 5 hours in the ER. Never ends, does it.... I am finally done with the listserve catchup, it is 1am, and I am off to bed. Salem (, age 8 1/2)
