Guest guest
Hi Everyone: I'm reading things and hearing things and I think I have myself confused. Are all RSS kids hypoglycemic? and if so is it to a certain age that you need to watch for or is it forever? Is there testing or signs to watch for? Guest guest
Hi , Not all of the kids are hypo-g but most of them are suscepable (sp). It's usually at it's worst from birth to 2 years (someone correct me if I'm wrong!) and some outgrow it. Spilling ketones in the urine is the pre-cursor to becoming hypoglycemic. You can buy Ketostiks over the counter at any pharmacy (they're in the diabetic supplies), just read the instructions and test the first morning's urine. Some signs are night sweats, shaking, hard to wake. Olivia is still prone to hypo-g, I think it's because of her low weight, so we test her urine a few times a week in the morning and make sure that she gets a good combo of carbs and protien into her, refined sugars aren't a good way to bring their sugars up, carbs are the best we've found. Refined sugars tend to make her spike and crash, starting it all over again. Hope this helped some! Leah, mom to 9yrs and Olivia, 4.75yrs, 18lbs, 33 " , RSS, OI, lots of meds > Hi Everyone: > > I'm reading things and hearing things and I think I have myself > confused. Guest guest
Thanks Leah, I think in the past may have had problems but we had no idea that she was RSS or anything. is just recovering from a urinary tract infection and last week had a urine culture done. Too bad I didn't know ahead of time I could have had that checked. Oh well, nothing really lost since I can get the strips over the counter. By the way I love the picture of Olivia in the cabinets! How is Olivia's shoulder doing? Where do you live? Thanks again, B. Guest guest
Although lots of RSS kids have hypoglycemia at all different times, they are most at risk when they are sick. Especially with fever, vomitting, diarhea and not eating or drinking normally. That is the only time I know for sure that was spilling Ketones, when he was very sick with all of the above.
