Guest guest
Del, Are you having a scan or an ultrasound? The scan surely is radioactive iodine... I 123. This is how they see how much iodine your thyroid takes up. You have already been diagnosed with Graves, this test is absolutley unnecessary. If they suspect you have a thyroid nodule, you can opt for the ultrasound. Please don't have this test!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guest guest
Del, I'm adding Elaine's name to the subject line. So far as I've ever heard, they use radioactive iodine and NOTHING else to do the uptake test--it is however a different isotope than the one they use for RAI. I'm pretty sure I'm correct here-but Elaine would be the definitive source for accurate info, not me. You can get all the diagnostic info without this test, an ultrasound of your thyroid and a TSI antibody test will give the diagnosis. The only " real " reason to do an uptake that I'm aware of, is to determine your future dose of RAI--and that, with your eye problems and allergy to iodine, is about the worst thing you could ever do to yourself.
