Hi Mimi

I'm glad to here Isaac did so well for you. The aunt on the other

hand . . . You would think she would know better but maybe people do

it to her and she finds no harm in it, maybe? Who knows, in any event

you don't have to deal with her too much. Some people are just so

STUPID in plain English. It could be that she feels that she need to

put someone else down so it wasn't her son this time. Be happy that

Isaac didn't understand the comment.

Hi Mimi,

Sorry you had to go through that. I've had a similar comment made

about Autumn but it was from a neighbor/friend, not family. She

said " so she's going to be a midget? Hmm, she doesn't have stubby

arms. " as she lifted Autumn's arms and flopped them down and gave her

a weird look. I couldn't believe how someone could just say

something like that. I was so mad and I just wanted to let her have

it, but instead I changed the subject and then went inside fuming.

She has said nothing about it since then though. Some people just

need to keep their mouths shut, the world would be a better place.

Thank you all so much for your posts..they made me feel better since

I know at some point in time many of you have had a similar

expierence. I am sure it won't be the last time someome will make a

stupid comment..so next time I will be more prepared. I knew that you

would understand more than anyone else would!

Thanks again!!

Mimi - Your relative's reaction is exactly why my husband no longer

will let me explain that RSS is a form of primordial dwarfism (and

I've learned, painfully, that he was right). People's minds connect

dwarfism with " achondroplasia " dwarfism. So.... if I am educating

people in a more formal setting or through written documents, I use

that description. But when referring to , I tend to say " a

rare genetic growth disorder " (not inherited/recessive but more

random, like with Down's Syndrome where it is just a " fluke " ). I

will refer to the fact that the average RSS girl reaches 4'7 " or

so. That usually makes them realize HOW short these kids are....

I am sorry that you had to deal with such ignorance from someone who

should know better. At least Isaac has incredible parents who DO

know better....
