Guest guest
Just got this message from FEAT news and thought people might want to know about this show airing on Sunday May 20. (Aidan's mom) Discovery Channel Series Begins Sunday With Autism A Discovery Health Channel four-part series, titled " Fires of the Mind " , beginning Sunday attempts to " dispel some of the frightening myths " about four mental illnesses: schizophrenia, manic depression, anxiety disorders and autism. (Marsa, Los Angeles Times, 5/14). Narrated by actors Mariette Hartley and Asner, each show chronicles real stories of patients and their families, friends and providers. Released during Mental Health Month 2001, the program aims to increase public understanding and awareness of mental illness. Hartley, the national spokesperson for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, said, " For so many years, mental illness has been a taboo topic. In this series, we hear directly from sufferers and their families, and viewers realize that these conditions can affect any of us. " The series premieres with The Invisible Wall: Autism on Sunday May 20 at 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. (West Coast time - 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. East Coast time) and on Saturday May 26 at 11:00 p.m. (West Coast Time - 2:00 a.m. East Coast Time). _______________________________________________________
Guest guest
My mom taped it for us and we finally watched it last night. It was pretty good. There was no mention of the diet. They started out showing autistic kids with spooky music in the background and used black and white film. My DH came in to be with me...he knows how these things affect me! But they finally showed kids using regular color film and normal sound instead of weird music. They had a brief interview with Dr. Lovaas and a long one with Temple Grandin. That was a kick as I've never seen her. They showed a long interview with another adult autistic woman who has a job and her own apartment. She was very sweet and gave me hope for my daughter. It was ok as an overview but no real specifics. It is only 1 hour. I do object to autism being referred to as a mental illness. HELLO!!!! ARE WE OUT OF THE DARK AGES YET??? Sorry for yelling...had to get it out of my system. Did anyone else see it and what did you think?
