Guest guest
Jen, Good thing you noticed. And that explains how you were feeling. So perhaps there is some relief, knowing that the solution is clear. Thanks for the reminder that we need to be vigilant, unfortunately. Very irritating, indeed. Maybe you can suggest to the pharmacist that they take ATDs for a couple of weeks, to help them to remember to give you the right dose in the future ;-) Hope you feel better soon, At 07:05 PM 9/2/2003, you wrote: >Oh do I have story today. Guest guest
> I hear alot about because I am on 900mg of PTU Someone - was it ? - replied to your first post. I second what she said. 900 is very, very rarely used, like on an emergency basis for thyroid storm, for example. Have you tried Tapazole? If you do, you don't have to start at 90, which is roughly the equivalent as far as potency goes. You may also want to repost your numbers and a brief synopsis of how you ended up at 900 and put Elaine's name in the subject line. This is where more subtle testing comes into play than the basic TSH and FT3 and 4. The very dramatic weight gain combined with the panic and confusion you described is very worrisome. I hope you can start to come to a resolution before week's end. take care, fay ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Guest guest
Hi Allie, First, I have to say I've been very sporadic about reading posts lately 'cause I've been very busy with " real life " c**p, so if I've missed a lot, forgive me. But ***900*** mg. of PTU??? That is a scary thought. That is more than double the highest dose I've ever heard of anyone being on. Are you SURE that's correct? I take Tapazole, which equates out to 10% of the dosage (10 mg. per 100 of PTU), and the " normal " starting dose is 30-40 mg., so the equivalent dose of PTU would be 300 to a max (if you were really really hyper) of 400 mg. That said, I don't know everything and am not a medical pro--but I do find it interesting that you titled your post thyroid rage. I'd be enraged too if I had that happen to me. Other than the advice to question everything, get All your labs and share them here (again, forgive me if you've already done that and I missed it), and make a stink with this doctor, I'm not sure what I can say. Except that when I go even a little hypo (for me, not even hypo-by-the-numbers), I gain weight rapidly and steadily and have NO appetite at all. I can eat 10% of my normal diet and gain. Alternatively many of us (alas, not me!) lose weight very easily when hyper--but also when you're hyper, you're not absorbing the nutrients from the food, so it's not a good thing! Good luck, Terry > From: allecatz1970@... > Reply-To: graves_support > Date: Wed, 3 Sep 2003 14:05:00 EDT > To: graves_support > Subject: Re: thyroid rage > > Ok help me out here....I just got done postin about the restless leg thing > and totally flaked on askin if anyone can answer me why back in December 2002 > i > weighed 212 lbs...and by the time i got seen by my Endo....i was a whoppin > 178.....?I have been keepin an eye on my weight.....and up until August 7th I > was > sittin at 163 and now today i weigh myself and am at a whoppin 216 > pounds....How did i gain that much weight in a little over three weeks?? > I hear alot about because I am on 900mg of PTU....i may crash from hyper into > hypo.....is that whats happening now???.... > freaked out.....HELPPPPPP!!!!!!!! > Alle > > >
Guest guest
alle. I'd love to know what your TSH, FT3 and FT4 were for any dr to put you on 900 mg of PTU. I've read of people being on 300 a day, but 900? That's a little much. If your dr has you on that type of dosage, it's possible to go hypo and that's going to show weight gain, as well as many other symptoms when you reach hypoT. How long have you been on such a dose? I was originally started off on 30 mgs of Methimazole, but the reason I went hypoT on it and had so many problems was because my dr had no clue what he was doing. I started gaining weight through the holidays last year in 2002. He then decided that somewhere in the equation of my TSH, T3 and T4 (he never checked anything but these three) that I should be taken off the meds randomly. I'll never understand the equation that was going on in his head, but I will never go back to him again. It's very possible to go hypo on too many meds, and if you're dr is looking at your TSH and basing his actions on that then he's doing you a disservice. Can you post your labs (last taken) and even the previous ones, along with the ranges the lab used? Or are you getting copies of those from your Endo? Guest guest
As for PTU dosage, at one time (near the beginning) I was on a daily dosage of 450mg. And it took awhile before my extreme hyperT symptoms dropped. And when they did (which I knew by extreme fatigue), I slowly moved to 300mg. a day. And within 8 months I went to 150mg. a day...the dosage I have been on now for a long time. It's been 2 years & 6 months at 50mg. 3 times a day for me.. A dosage of 900mg per day PTU sounds excessive, however the person receiving it will " know " because eventually they will get so sluggish that they can hardly function. (And note...it may or may not even show up as any " less hyper " on standard TSH test.) Best to all, Ron > alle. Guest guest
But it would show the person to be hypO on Free T3 and Free T4 tests. Alle, perhaps you can get some new results for FT3 and FT4 -- that may clarify what's going on. There seems to be a consensus in the opinion that 900mg is too much, and is a dose more appropriate for acute thyroid storm. Best wishes, At 08:29 PM 9/3/2003, you wrote: >A dosage of 900mg per day PTU sounds excessive, however the >person receiving it will " know " because eventually they will get so >sluggish that they can hardly function. Guest guest
Oh, and a person shouldn't have to feel hypO (i.e., sluggish, gaining a lot of weight) in order to start reducing one's PTU dose. Really, the need for a decrease should be determined BEFORE one is hypO, and from what I've gleaned, decreasing should start once one re-enters the normal range on FT's. Then trying to keep an even keel, until hitting a maintenance dose, and continuing to get regular blood work, as things can change at any time. Guest guest
Have you asked him why he's not tried you on Methimazole if he feels that the PTU isn't working for you? I also noticed you said you take vioxx? You do know that will raise your blood pressure. Sandy~Houston Re: thyroid rage Sandy....In March 2003 was i was diagnosed with Graves Disease. Guest guest
alle, ask your dr about it. I know we've discussed this at work. I work with a lot of older women. I'm the youngest, and I'm by far not young. lol. I just turned 49 but I'm the baby of the group at my job. There are 3 of us who've all had elevated bp with being on Celebrex, or Vioxx. While I'm not a dr, I have noticed that most people who lists a high blood pressure also list that they will be taking one of those meds too. I find it an interesting topic though, and wonder if there's a substance in it, that might help to cause it? I will certainly pin my current dr down cuz he also prescribed it for me when my back was killing me once they found out it wasn't kidney or bladder infection related. I just didn't take it long. I saw no need to after what the specialist said, and so far, I've done fine without it. I'll let you know what my dr says. I'd be interested in hearing what you're dr says about it too.
