Guest guest
Hi ! My g-son's endo started on GHT when he was about 15 months of age. At the time, we were still having problems getting B to gain weight, even though he has a g-tube in place. All of my research had shown that GH was not effective under the age of 2, and that because it would spur B's growth velocity up 1.5-2 times his " normal " rate, he would have to be able to increase his weight gain proportionally. There was no way that he would have been able to do this at that time. We contacted Dr H and asked for her opinion. She agreed with us, and GHT was stopped. Dr H believes that a child must complete their caloric catch-up growth BEFORE beginning GHT. This happens for all kids at different ages. She seemed to think that this had happened for B when his growth flat-lined while his weight kept rising, around 2 years of age. My understanding of " toddler " formulas is that they do not provide 100% nutrition by themselves. I would check into that, and make sure that Liam is getting as much nutrition as possible from what he is willing to drink. I know that Dr H does not recommend PediaSure for our kids because it contains too much sugar, as well as causing an increase in gastric emptying time, and leaving the child with a full feeling too long. From what I understand she changes most kids over to a formula called PeptaMin Jr, because it doesn't cause these problems for our kids. Jodie mentioned Periactin, and I've only ever heard good things about it. If you look back in the archives, there are numerous emails about how to ramp up the dose given, and this helps to control some of the crankiness that is a side-effect of the med. I hope this helps! Guest guest
Great Question ! I have been meaning to ask the same thing. We have been waiting to see the endocrinologist for two months already and our appointment isn't until August 26 (isn't that an awful wait?) (Mom to Hannah who will be 3 in three weeks -RSS and Braxton almost 4 -Autism)
Guest guest
Okay now I have another question.... will Dr.H be able to prescribe Periactin or even Peptimin Jr for Liam at the convention? If not will she at least give me written recommedations to take to his Ped? If I have to I would be willing to see her once a year in NY (I have family there and visit once a year) If I can get my insurance to cover it.... Mom to Liam (3 1/2 years old 34 3/4 " 27 lbs SGA / possible RSS, Hypothyriod, Epilepsy.) Started GHT 5/18/04 and Jed (11 years old) Tourettes, CAPD,SVT. Guest guest
, I don't think Dr H gives out prescriptions at the convention, but I'm sure she makes recommendations, as we got LOTS of them last year! Guest guest
I just wanted to mention that someone I met at the conference was given a prescription from Dr. H. at the conference, but I don't know if this the norm.
