Guest guest
Hi all, I wonder if any of you can shed some light on this... I have been taking Propranolol (beta-blockers) since I was diagnosed with GD. When my last blood test results showed that my Free T4 was reducing, I reduced my dose of Carbimazole from 10mg twice a day to 5mg three times a day and the doctor suggested I also reduce my Propranolol from 10mg three times a day to 10mg twice a day. I never *did* take my beta-blockers three times a day, I always took 10mg twice a day because I felt that worked better for me so in effect, I haven't reduced my dosage of Beta-Blockers at all. My question is.. I have been losing weight even before I got GD because I am on a low-fat no sugar diet (I am diabetic). What is puzzling me is that I *should* be losing weight because I am still on my diet. I haven't lost any weight for about a month and I *know* my body and I *should* be losing weight. I am also getting a lot more exercise than every before, I walk briskly on the beach for an hour every day. I know that I am definitely NOT hypo becuause the other day I missed my midday dose of Carbimazole and the next morning I was bouncing off the walls and my eyes were swollen (a sure sign I am hyper) also, my blood test was done just 2 weeks ago and my Free T4 count was still high (30.. norm is 8-20). I was wondering whether the beta-blockers are slowing down my metabolism too much. I have checked on the web and cannot find any side-effects that would explain this but I feel tempted to reduce my dosage of beta-blockers from 10mg twice a day to 5mg twice a day. Another reason that I would like to reduce my beta-blockers that I get the occasional spell of dizziness, especially when I bend down. My blood pressure is quite normal. 120/80 so I know that cannot be the cause. Any advice would be greatly welcome. BTW, I don't think I mentioned this but the last time I went to my GP (2 weeks ago) he informed me that he had been doing some research on GD and came to the conclusion that RAI and thyroidectomy should always be a last resort only after trying ATDs for at least 2 years. He then told me to stop looking so damn smug <VBG>. Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.
