The scan surely is radioactive iodine... I 123. This is how they see how much iodine your thyroid takes up. You have already been diagnosed with Graves, this test is absolutley unnecessary. If they suspect you have a thyroid nodule, you can opt for the ultrasound. Please don't have this test!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had this test and it was no big deal...why are you so firm about not having this test? Always, Elise**
Guest guest
Elise, Del already has eye symptoms and this scan is known to worsen or cause the onset of eye disease. Plus Del is allergic to iodine...this test is radioactive iodine. Also, a scan can tell you that you are hyperthyroid, but not the source. THEY already know he is hyperthyroid. The TSI antibody test is a simple, noninvasive blood test and is specific to Graves Disease. The RAIU scan is outdated and unnecessary in diagnosing Graves Disease. Why swallow radiation if you don't have to? God bless,

I agree with you..Don't do something that can cause you more problems when it is supposed to be helping you. I had the RAI done so it would bring my thyroid levels down, and hopefully make me " normal " again, or go into being Hypo. Hypo is supposed to be easier to regulate, and at least I would be able to have anesthesia that I can't now since being Hyper. My blood tests told I was Hyperthyroid, and my Dr says I have Graves Disease, but that's the only way I know. Always, Elise**
Guest guest
Hi, Terry is correct although sometimes technetium is also used and that's also a radioactive substance. Usually, I-123 is used for the uptake although sometimes I-131 is used. The uptake is no longer considered very useful, and it's not necessary for a diagnosis of Graves' disease. Take care, elaine
Guest guest
At diagnosis my uptake/scan used 131 iodine. I was not pleased to find...when I went to Mayo for another opinion...they don't consider that a " scan " . It only determines the % of iodine for ablation. (The doc knew I had no intention of ablating my thyroid and ordered it anyway!!!) I had been hopeful for an uptake with technictium. I don't know the difference...radiationwise, but that is a " scan " that detects more aspects of the thyroid. Ever hopeful, AJ > Del, > > Are you having a scan or an ultrasound?
